Ian Botham leads trio with a century and 10 wickets in a Test match

Legendary England all-rounder Ian Botham was the first player to record a century and 10 wickets in a Test match.

In the solitary Test of England’s 1980 tour of India in Mumbai, Botham grabbed a 6/58 to help the visitors bundle out India for 242 in their first innings.

However, England struggled when they came out to bat as, at one point, they were reduced to 58/5. Ian Botham took it upon himself and smashed a 144-ball 114 to help England maintain a 54-run lead.

After his exploits with the ball in the first innings, Botham returned to torment the Gundappa Viswanath-captained India as he scalped seven wickets for just 48 runs.

England would then romp off to a 10-wicket win as they chased a target of 96 runs with ease.

Three years later, Pakistan’s Imran Khan registered a century and 10 wickets in a Test match against arch-rivals India in 1983.

One of the greatest all-rounders to play the sport, Imran claimed the important wickets of Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Kapil Dev and Syed Kirmani to help Pakistan bowl out India for 372 in the first innings.

When it was Pakistan’s turn to bat, Imran Khan followed Javed Miandad (126), Zaheer Abbas (168) and Saleem Malik (107) in scoring a century and powering the hosts to a score of 652.

India would later be dismissed for 286, thanks to Imran Khan’s 5/82 which helped Pakistan win the Test by 10 wickets after successfully chasing a target of just 7.

Shakib Al Hasan is the only cricketer in the 21st century to register a century and take 10 wickets in the same Test match.

The Bangladesh star all-rounder scored a century (137) in the first innings of a 2014 Test against Zimbabwe while claiming five wickets (5/80 and 5/44) in both innings.

Shakib’s efforts helped the Tigers win the second of the three-match Test series by 162 runs.

It is also worth mentioning that Australia’s Alan Davidson was the first player in cricket history to register 100 runs and 10 wickets in a Test match.

Davidson, a left-handed all-rounder, achieved the feat in a 1960 Test match against West Indies when he scored 44 and 80 in either innings of the Test, while recording hauls of 5/135 and 6/87.

England’s 84-year-old record still tops the list for biggest win in Test cricket by runs

Back when England scored 903/7d against Australia in 1938, the match produced several key moments such as a certain Chuck Fleetwood-Smith conceding most runs in one Test innings to Leonard Hutton facing most balls faced in a single Test innings. However, nothing compares to England’s record victory by an innings and 579 runs, which remains the biggest win in Test cricket by runs.

Often termed as the Oval grind of 1938, the England team, led by Hutton, Maurice Leyland and Joe Hardstaff breached the 900-run mark; something that was never done in the history of the sport.

In what is a testament to the record, it took almost 60 years for any team to break the record when Sri Lanka posted 952/6d against India in 1997.

Back when Test cricket used to be the only format, England captain Wally Hammond had won the toss and decided to bat. Australia made a good start, removing Bill Edrich for just 12 runs but what followed next was historic.

Hutton first combined with Leyland for a 382-run partnership followed by another 200-plus run stand with Hardstaff which led to England scoring the highest first innings team total in Test.

Australia’s reply began on a sour note as England made life difficult for the visitors. After being dismissed for 201, Australia were forced to follow-on. The Aussies though continued to succumb in the second innings as England eventually won the game by an innings and 579 runs.

From 1938 to date, no team has ever managed to win a Test match by an innings and 500-plus run margin. The closest anyone has ever come was Australia in a 2002 Test match against South Africa.

After the Aussies had declared at 652/7, the Proteas struggled to cope with growing pressure before succumbing to a defeat by an innings and 360 runs.

West Indies’ win by an innings and 336 runs against India in a 1958 Test comes third on the list followed by Australia’s triumph over England by an innings and 332 runs in 1946. Pakistan occupy the fifth spot in the list with their win by an innings and 324 runs against New Zealand in 2002.

Pakistan New Zealand Innings and 324 runs 2002

As far as the Indian cricket team is concerned, their biggest Test win dates back to October 2018 when they defeated a depleted West Indies team by an innings and 272 runs.

Earlier in the same year, the Indian team had gotten better of Afghanistan by an innings and 262 runs which - their second biggest win in Test cricket. Lastly, their recent success against Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs is their fifth-biggest victory in the longest format.

From Fleetwood-Smith to Fazal Mahmood, know the bowlers who have conceded most runs in one Test innings

Former Australia spinner Leslie O'Brien "Chuck" Fleetwood-Smith holds the unwanted record for most runs conceded by a bowler in one Test innings. Playing against England in the fifth Test of Australia tour of England in 1938, the left-arm wrist-spinner conceded 298 runs in 87 overs and could only pick a solitary wicket.

Interestingly enough, it was the same match when England registered the then highest team total in Test cricket. Riding on Leonard Hutton’s triple century followed by tons from Maurice Leyland and Joe Hardstaff, the Three Lions posted 903/7d. Of those 903 runs, Fleetwood-Smith was responsible for 33 per cent of the total.

Chuck Fleetwood-Smith never played for Australia after that match.

Former India off-spinner Rajesh Chauhan follows the Australian at second place in the list for most runs conceded by a bowler in one Test innings. It was during the first Test of India tour of Sri Lanka in 1997 that the spinner conceded 276 runs in 78 overs while picking a single wicket.

History repeated itself almost 60 years after England had set the benchmark, as the second most expensive bowling spell in Test cricket came when Sri Lanka recorded 952/6d - which is now the highest team total in the longest format.

Before Fleetwood-Smith and Rajesh Chauhan, the record for runs conceded in one Test innings belonged to West Indies’ Oscar Scott. The leg-spinner from Jamaica had conceded 266 runs in 80.2 overs in the fourth Test of England’s tour of West Indies in 1930.

There are only four bowlers in the history of Test cricket who have conceded more than 250 runs in one Test innings, with the fourth being Pakistan’s Khan Mohammad. Playing against West Indies in 1958, the former leg-spinner bowled 54 overs, conceding 259 runs. In the very same match, his bowling partner Fazal Mahmood gave away 247 runs in 85.2 overs which completes the top five list for most runs conceded by a bowler in one Test innings.

Who is Dewald Brevis: Get to know South Africa’s ‘Baby AB’ who is also a self-proclaimed Sachin Tendulkar fan

When Dewald Brevis’ name came under the hammer during the Indian T20 League 2022 mega auction, nobody really expected the teams to go all out for the South African teenager. The teenager did have a fantastic U-19 World Cup in the Caribbean, but his T20 credentials were still relatively unknown.

It’s even more baffling to acknowledge that by the time the teams were bidding, he had only played one T20 match; a CSA T20 Challenge 2022 encounter between Titans and Knights. The match saw the opening batter scoring a 25-ball 23 as his team emerged victorious 27 runs.

As it turns out though, the likes of Team Chennai and Team Mumbai had done their homework and it was the latter who managed to get him for INR 3 crore, representing a significant hike from his base price of INR 20 lakh.

A record-breaking U-19 World Cup

Brevis’ stocks skyrocketed during the 2022 U-19 World Cup in the Caribbean. The tournament saw the best of the South African opener who only finished as the top scorer, but also broke Shikhar Dhawan’s record of most runs in a single U-19 World Cup campaign, accumulating 506 runs in six matches at 84.33. This included two hundreds and three half-centuries.

While South Africa failed to win the title, Brevis showcased he means business right from the time he took the crease against India U-19. His only failure during the competition came against Sri Lanka where he could only muster six runs.

Dewald Brevis’ record in U-19 World Cup:

65 and 2/43 vs India

104 and 2/18 vs Uganda

96 and 0/13 vs Ireland

97 and 2/40 vs England

6 and 1/52 vs Sri Lanka

138 and 0/34 vs Bangladesh

Four consecutive fifty-plus runs scores earned him the nickname ‘Baby AB’ and it is something that he needs to justify in the Indian T20 League.

“Dewald Brevis is a player who’s on everyone’s lips. He’s AB de Villers 2.0,” his South Africa coach Shukri Conrad was quoted by the ICC.

A self-proclaimed Sachin Tendulkar fan

While a comparison with his countryman AB de Villiers couldn’t come as any surprise, the cricketer idolises none other than the Indian batting legend, Sachin Tendulkar.

Speaking in a video interview with his new Indian T20 League team, Team Mumbai, Brevis said one of the things that he wants to do is to remain humble like Tendulkar and de Villiers despite his rising fame.

"The way he played was always an inspiration to me. My favourite innings of his is the ODI double-century, which happened to be against South Africa! I remember watching the match with my brother -- it was an amazing innings," Brevis said.

"I read his autobiography 'Playing it My Way' and there are a lot of things from there that I'd like to implement in my game. One thing I learnt from him is that you have to be humble because pride can be your downfall," he added.

Highest 1st innings score in Test cricket: The England team that almost scored 1000 runs

The England cricket team holds the record for the highest 1st innings score in Test cricket.

The English team of 1938 posted a score of 903/7d in the fifth Test of Australia's tour of England. Opener Leonard Hutton went all guns blazing with the bat as he hammered 364 runs off 847. His innings, which lasted 13 hours and 20 minutes, is the highest individual Test score by an England batter.

In response, Australia could only manage scores of 201 & 123 (follow-on) as England claimed a victory by an innings and 579 runs, the biggest ever winning margin in a Test match.

The match, however, proved to be a nightmare for Chuck Fleetwood-Smith as the Australian spinner conceded a whopping 298 runs in his 87-over spell, a record for most runs conceded by a bowler in one Test innings.

The 1938 England team bettered the previous record - 849 all out - that the reigning Cricket World Cup champions registered against Karl Nunes’ West Indies in 1930. The match ended in a draw and was the first instance of a tied Test.

West Indies are third on the list for highest 1st innings score in Test cricket. The Calypso Kings romped off to a score of 751/5d against England in their 2004 Test at the Antigua Recreation Ground.

The game was a historical affair as a certain Brian Lara hit an unprecedented unbeaten 400 off 582 balls. The record innings saw Lara create a record for the first quadruple century in international cricket and joined an elite list of players with the most triple centuries in Test cricket.

Next on the list is Australia, with a total of 735/6d against Zimbabwe in 2003. Matthew Hayden was the star performer for Australia as he scored 380 runs off 437 balls that was laced with 38 boundaries and 11 sixes. The Aussies would go on to win the Test by an innings and 175 runs.

Pakistan round up the top five list for highest 1st innings score in Test cricket. The Men in Green posted a score of 708 against England with Javed Miandad (260), Saleem Malik (102) and captain Imran Khan (118) scoring hundreds for Pakistan in the 1987 Test.

The Indian cricket team are among the top 10 teams with the highest 1st innings score in Test cricket. Team India, taking on Australia in the Sydney Test of their 2004 tour Down Under, scored 705/7d in 187.3 overs thanks to Sachin Tendulkar’s unbeaten 241 and VVS Laxman’s 178.

South Africa’s Mark Boucher, Pat Symcox headline list for Highest ninth-wicket partnership in Test cricket

South Africa cricketers Mark Boucher and Pat Symcox hold the record for the highest ninth-wicket partnership in Test cricket.

Boucher and Symcox forged a 195-run partnership for the ninth wicket against Pakistan during the first Test at The Wanderers in Johannesburg in 1998.

After an Aamer Sohail-led Pakistan won the toss and elected to field, the hosts lost eight wickets for 166 runs before Symcox joined Boucher at the crease.

Boucher and Symcox stitched a 195-run partnership that lasted for almost 50 overs, and propelled South Africa to amass a score of 364 in their first innings. Symcox scored an impressive century (108) while Boucher was dismissed for 78. The match ended in a draw.

Bangladesh duo Mohammad Mahmudullah and Taskin Ahmed feature second on the list for highest ninth-wicket partnership in Test cricket. Mahmudullah and Ahmed stitched a 191-run stand for the ninth wicket against Zimbabwe in a one-off Test in Harare in 2021.

After Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat, the visitors rode on Mahmudullah’s 150 and Ahmed’s 75 to post 468 in their first innings. Zimbabwe were bowled out for 276 and 256 on either side of their innings as Bangladesh won the Test by 220 runs.

Pakistan cricketers Asif Iqbal and Intikhab Alam recorded the third-highest ninth-wicket partnership in Test cricket.

Iqbal and Alam added 190 runs for the ninth wicket against England at The Oval during the third Test of Pakistan’s tour of England in 1967.

Bangladesh’s Mahmudullah and Abdul Hasan, and South African duo JP Duminy and Dale Steyn complete the top five list for highest ninth-wicket partnership in Test cricket.

Chris Gayle’s highest score in T20: Exploring Universe Boss’ finest performances in 20-over cricket

Chris Gayle’s highest score in T20 is a record-breaking unbeaten 175 knock off 66 balls for Team Bangalore, resulting in a massive win over Team Pune in the Indian T20 League in 2013.

Considered one of the greatest batters to have played T20 cricket, Gayle made his West Indies debut in the shortest format against New Zealand in 2006. Since then, the southpaw scored 1,899 runs in 79 T20Is at an average of 27.92 and a strike rate of 137.50. Gayle is currently the leading run-scorer for West Indies in the T20I format.

The self-proclaimed ‘Universe Boss’ was part of the West Indies side that won the ICC T20 World Cup in 2012 and 2016.

Apart from his impressive numbers in T20I cricket, Gayle has had a stellar Indian T20 League career.

Having represented Kolkata, Bangalore and Punjab franchises in the Indian T20 League, Gayle has aggregated 4965 runs in 142 matches at an impressive strike rate of 148.96 and an average of 39.42. He has registered six hundreds and 31 half-centuries in the Indian T20 League.

Gayle has also played for several teams in the Big Bash League (BBL), Pakistan Super League (PSL), Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and Bangladesh Premier League (BPL)

Gayle is the current owner of the record for scoring the most runs in T20 cricket, amassing 14.562 runs in 463 matches at a strike rate of 144.75 and an average of 36.22. He has hit 22 hundreds and 88 fifties.

Interestingly, Gayle also holds the record for most centuries in T20 cricket (22), 14 more than his nearest rivals Aaron Finch and David Warner.

Chris Gayle’s highest score in T20I

Chris Gayle registered his highest score in T20Is against South Africa during the opening match of the inaugural edition of the ICC T20 World Cup in 2007. Opening the batting alongside Devon Smith, Gayle smashed 117 off 57 balls to power West Indies to 205/6 in their quota of 20 overs. However, the Proteas rode on Herschelle Gibbs’ unbeaten 55-ball 90 and Justin Kemp’s 46 not out off 22 balls to secure an eight-wicket win.

Chris Gayle’s highest score in Indian T20 League

Former Bangalore batter Chris Gayle’s highest score in the Indian T20 League came against Pune at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on April 23, 2013.

With his team batting first, Gayle created history by breaking the record for the fastest ever century in T20 cricket. Gayle smashed the fastest T20 hundred in just 30 balls against a struggling Pune bowling side. The swashbuckling batter rallied to score an unbeaten 175 off just 66 balls to help Bangalore post a mammoth 263/5 in their 20 overs.

In reply, the now-defunct Pune franchise managed just 133/9 in their 20 overs as Bangalore clinched a massive 130-run victory.

From 1001 international wickets to winning 1999 World Cup: Revisiting Shane Warne’s biggest achievements

Legendary Australia leg-spinner Shane Warne passed away aged 52 due to a suspected heart attack in Thailand on March 4.

Considered one of the all-time greats of cricket, Warne made his international debut against India in a Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in 1992.

Since his debut, the Victoria-born cricketer went on to play 145 Tests and 194 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for Australia. He retired from all forms of cricket in 2007.

Second highest wicket-taker of all-time

Shane Warne claimed 708 Test wickets in 145 matches at an average of 25.41, including 67 five-wicket hauls and 22 ten-wicket hauls. Warne is the second-highest wicket-taker in Tests only behind former Sri Lanka off-spinner Muthiah Muralitharan.

In the ODI format, Warne bagged 293 wickets in 194 matches at an average of 25.73 and an economy of 4.25.

The leg-spinner remains the second-highest wicket-taker in cricket’s history, with 1001 wickets in 339 matches. Only Sri Lankan legend Muralitharan has picked more international wickets (1347).

Helping Australia lift the 1999 Cricket World Cup

Warne played a pivotal role in helping the Australia cricket team claim the 1999 Cricket World Cup hosted primarily by England, with Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the Netherlands acting as co-hosts.

After picking 12 wickets in the preliminary phases of the 1999 World Cup, Warne produced two Player of the Match performances in the semi-final and final.

In the semi-final, the leg-spinner bagged four wickets for 29 runs against South Africa to power the Aussies to the 1999 World Cup final. He dismissed South Africa's top-order batters - Herschelle Gibbs, Gary Kirsten, Hansie Cronje and Jacques Kallis.

Warne was the wrecker-in-chief in the final against Pakistan, claiming 4/29 in nine overs to bundle out the Men in Green for 132. Australia chased down the target in 20.1 overs with eight wickets in hand to clinch their second World Cup title.

Warne ended the tournament as joint highest-taker alongside New Zealand pacer Geoff Allott, as both claimed 20 wickets each.

The ball of the century

In the first Ashes Test of 1993, Shane Warne announced his arrival by producing a sensational delivery in his very first ball to bamboozle England's Mike Gatting at the Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester. After Warne pitched the ball outside leg and made it take an unexpected curve which ended up kissing Gatting's off stump leaving Gatting astonished. The sensational delivery is hailed as the "ball of the century".

Interestingly, Warne has picked the most wickets in Ashes history. He claimed 195 wickets in 36 Ashes Tests at an average of 23.25 with best bowling figures of 8/71 in an Ashes innings.

Guiding Rajasthan to clinch the inaugural edition of Indian T20 League

Former Rajasthan skipper Shane Warne became the first captain to lift the Indian T20 League title in 2008. Under his incredible leadership, an inexperienced Rajasthan outfit won the inaugural edition of the Indian T20 League, defeating an MS Dhoni-led Chennai in the final.

Other major achievements

Shane Warne’s Test exploits earned him a spot on the Wisden Cricketers of the Year list (1994 Wisden Cricketers' Almanack), and he was named the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World in 1997 and 2004.

Warne was also included in Australia's greatest ever ODI team by ESPN ahead of the 2007 Cricket World Cup in the West Indies.

Warne was inducted into the Cricket Australia Hall of Fame in 2012 and the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2013.
