Germany will lock horns against in-form Spain in their second Group E fixture of the FIFA World Cup 2022 campaign on November 28 at the Al Bayt Stadium in Qatar. The match is scheduled to commence at 12:30 AM Indian Standard Time (IST).

The Germany national football team began their quest for a record-equalling fifth World Cup trophy on an underwhelming note when they lost to Japan in their opening fixture of the tournament.

Veteran midfielder Ilkay Gundogan put the Manuel Neuer-led side ahead in the 33rd minute with a well-taken spot kick after left-back David Raum was fouled in the penalty box.

The German defenders managed to keep their opponents at bay till the 75th minute but substitute Ritsu Doan found the back of the net for Japan before another substitute, Takuma Asano, completed the comeback win eight minutes later with a brilliant goal.

Germany, the 2014 FIFA World Cup champions, now face an uphill task to stay alive in the marquee event. Dropping any point from hereon will jeopardise their qualification for the Round of 16 and may see them exit from the group stage for the second consecutive time at World Cups.

On the other hand, the Spain national football team won their opening fixture in some style, with a dominant 7-0 victory over Costa Rica.

Winger Dani Olmo scored in the 11th minute to open the floodgates, with Marco Asensio and Ferran Torres helping them lead 3-0 at half-time.

The second half was even better as Ferran Torres, Gavi, Carlos Soler and Alvaro Morata scored one apiece to help La Roja register their biggest win in FIFA World Cup history.

A win for the Sergio Busquets-led side over Die Mannschaft will ensure their spot in the Round of 16.

Spain vs Germany head-to-head

The two European giants have faced each other on 25 occasions in all competitions so far.

It has been a tightly-contested affair between the heavyweights as Spain have won eight head-to-head matches as compared to Germany’s nine. As many as eight encounters have ended in a stalemate.

Interestingly, the two teams faced off in Spain’s title-winning 2010 campaign semi-final as well, with La Roja emerging victorious by 1-0.

Nonetheless, the last clash between the two teams saw Spain fire six past the Germans in the 2020 UEFA Nations League A.
