The Argentina national football team are on the backfoot after suffering a 2-1 defeat against Saudi Arabia in their opening match of the 2022 edition. 

After taking an early lead through a Lionel Messi penalty, Argentina got physically outplayed by the Saudis in the second half with two quick second-half goals from Saleh Al-Shehri and Salem Al-Dawsari.

Argentina need at least a point from the upcoming match against Mexico to stay alive in the Group C standings.

Meanwhile, Mexico, who finished second in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers, had a tough start to their campaign in Qatar. Despite having 61 per cent ball possession, Gerardo Martino’s side played a 0-0 draw against Poland.

The Mexico national football team can seal a place in the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2022 by winning against Argentina.

Argentina and Mexico first played each other in the inaugural edition of the FIFA World Cup in 1930, with the Argentine side winning 6-3. 

Their last match at the football World Cup was in 2010, which Argentina won 3-1, courtesy of a brace from Carlos Tevez and a goal from Gonzalo Higuain. The Mexicans also lost this fixture in the 2006 edition.

Argentina have won 16, lost five and drawn 14 of their 35 matches against Mexico across all competitions. The latest of Mexico's wins was in 1990 when they won 2-0.
