Most Super Raids in Pro Kabaddi: Pardeep Narwal a league above the rest - know top 10 raiders

In Pro Kabaddi (PKL), a Super Raid happens when a raider scores three or more points for the team in a single raid. The points can be touch points or a combination of touch and bonus points. It is a difficult skill to execute, requiring high agility and street-smartness on the mat.

However, the two points gained by inflicting an all-out are not considered for a Super Raid.

Pardeep Narwal has the most Super Raids in PKL with 73. Known as the ‘Dubki King’, Narwal has been an explosive raider in the league since his debut in 2015.

Plying his trade at Bengaluru Bulls, Patna Pirates and U.P. Yoddhas, he is the top raider in Pro Kabaddi. Pardeep Narwal also holds the record for the most successful Super Raid in PKL history. He collected six points in a single raid vs Haryana Steelers in 2017.

So far, Pardeep Narwal is the only player to have scored more than 50 Super Raids in PKL. In fact, the Haryana-born raider has almost twice the number of Super Raids compared to his closest competitor. Pardeep Narwal averages a Super Raid about every two games.

Maninder Singh is closest to Pardeep Narwal and is poised to become the second player to reach 50 Super Raids. He was a part of the inaugural title-winning team in Jaipur Pink Panthers and also led Bengal Warriors to their first trophy in PKL Season 7.

Pawan Sehrawat, Rahul Chaudhari, Deepak Hooda and Vikash Kandola are other top raiders featuring in the top 10.

Fazel Atrachali, Manjeet Chhillar lead the charts for most tackle points in Pro Kabaddi

Fazel Atrachali with 424 tackle points in 146 matches holds the record for most tackle points in Pro Kabaddi.

Since Season 3, the Iranian has featured five out of six times in the list of top 10 defenders of the season and is the only defender to cross the 80 tackle points mark twice in succession (Season 6 and 7).

Manjeet Chhillar is the second most successful defender in Pro Kabaddi with 391 tackle points in 132 matches.

Manjeet, who topped the tackle points chart for defenders in Season 1 and Season 3, is one of two players alongside Fazel Atrachali to top the tackle points leaderboard twice in separate Pro Kabaddi seasons. Manjeet - a 2014 Asian Games gold medalist - has 25 High 5s to his name, the second-most in PKL after Tamil Thalaivas’ Surjeet Singh.

In Season 4, Manjeet Chhillar broke the all-time record for most tackle points (11) in a Pro Kabaddi match against Bengaluru Bulls.

Girish Maruti Ernak, the left-corner defender, is third with 359 tackle points in 143 matches.

Sandeep Narwal - a 2016 South Asian Games gold medalist - has 360 tackle points in 155 matches in Pro Kabaddi. The Haryana-born player has 29 Super Tackles to his name in Pro Kabaddi, which is the most by any player in the league.

Surjeet Singh has 348 tackle points in 127 Pro Kabaddi matches. The defender holds the record for most High 5s (29) in Pro Kabaddi.

Ravinder Pahal is next on the list with 339 tackle points in 124 matches in Pro Kabaddi history. ‘The Hawk’ as Pahal is popularly known is one of the best corner defenders in the league with 23 High 5s. Renowned for his block and double thigh hold, Ravinder Pahal has featured in the top 10 defenders list in five of the first seven Pro Kabaddi seasons.

PKL Season 9: Know who joins Jaipur Pink Panthers, Puneri Paltan in playoffs

The ongoing Pro Kabaddi League Season 9 is getting exciting with each passing day. With just a handful of matches remaining for each team, the race for a playoff spot has started to get intense.

For starters, the top two teams in the PKL Season 9 points table will qualify directly for the semi-final. Teams positioned from third to sixth will battle it out in the eliminator with the third-placed team facing the sixth and the fourth-placed side squaring off against the fifth.

Inaugural season winners Jaipur Pink Panthers sealed a spot in the knockout stages with 69 points from 19 matches. They won 13 and lost six, having an astonishing score difference of 134.

Pink Panthers’ Raider Arjun Deshwal leads the charts for most raid points in PKL Season 9 whereas Ankush tops the list of the most tackle points

The other team that has confirmed its playoffs berth is Puneri PaltanThe Fazel Atrachali-led side won 12, lost five and tied two to make it to the knockouts.

While the captain has led from the front in the defence department, with 51 tackle points from 19 matches, Aslam Inamdar is their side’s most successful raider, scoring 138 points from 17 encounters.

Bengaluru Bulls, U.P. Yoddhas, Tamil Thalaivas and Dabang Delhi K.C. are the other teams to make it to the playoffs after an enthalling race for qualification.

Explained: How Haryana Steelers can qualify for playoffs of Pro Kabaddi Season 9

The Pro Kabaddi Season 9 is heading towards its business end, with nine teams battling it out for the Eliminator positions, one of them being the Haryana Steelers.

The franchise formed in 2017 reached playoffs twice in the previous four editions and are looking to make it to the top six for the third time. With three successive wins against fellow top six contenders Bengal Warriors, U Mumba and Patna Pirates, the Steelers are within touching distance of an Eliminator position.

The Jaipur Pink Panthers and Puneri Paltan are occupying the top two positions in the PKL Season 9 points table, and are favourites to clinch a direct spot in the semi-finals. With both these sides accumulating 69 points each, it seems unlikely that they will lose out on a top six spot as it stands.

UP Yodhas (65 points) and Bengaluru Bills (63 points) are close on the above two’s heels and look like safe bets for the top six, barring some major upsets. Both teams can also launch a late charge for the top two.

Tamil Thalaivas (56 points) and Dabang Delhi (54 points) are currently occupying the fifth and sixth spots.

How can Haryana Steelers qualify for playoffs in Pro Kabaddi League Season 9?

Haryana Steelers currently have 51 points after 19 matches, just three shy of a top six spot, and are seventh on the PKL Season 9 standings. At this point, their fate is in their hands as by winning all three of their remaining matches, they will confirm a place in the playoffs.

They have one tricky fixture against Jaipur Pink Panthers followed by a clash against Telugu Titans, who won just two matches this season. Their playoff spot, however, could hang on the final league stage fixture against Tamil Thalaivas on December 10.

Since the Thalaivas are occupying one of the top six spots, just above the Steelers, five points or more in this fixture would automatically put them in the Eliminators.

If the Steelers drop points in any of their three matches, they will have to hope that Thalaivas or Dabang Delhi also drop points.

However, the scenario that head coach Manpreet Singh would be hoping for is that they win all three matches and do not depend on any other results.

Explained: How U Mumba can qualify for playoffs in Pro Kabaddi League Season 9

The Pro Kabaddi League Season 9 has witnessed some breathtaking encounters between the 12 teams so far.

U Mumba, who have had an inconsistent campaign so far, have bagged nine wins and as many losses in the 18 matches played so far.

They have won three consecutive matches only once when they defeated Gujarat Giants, Bengal Warriors and Telugu Titans earlier in the competition.

While the raiders Guman Singh and Ashish have been on top in the raiding department, defender Rinku’s exquisite performances time and again have seen him feature among the top defenders in PKL Season 9.

U Mumba, arguably, could have found themselves in a better position if not for the recent results that have gone downhill. The Surinder Singh-led side has lost four of their five matches and has lost ground to the other teams in the race for the knockouts.

Nonetheless, all is not over for the two-time runners-up.

With the league stage approaching its business end, U Mumba are currently placed in seventh position in the Pro Kabaddi League season 9 points table, one place off the eliminator berth as the top six teams will battle it out in the knockouts for a spot in the final.

Here’s how the Season 2 champions can make it to the knockouts this time out.

How U Mumba can qualify for playoffs in Pro Kabaddi League Season 9?

U Mumba have four fixtures in hand to decide their fate.

Three of these matches are against the sides positioned above them in the points table, namely U.P. Yoddhas, Dabang Delhi K.C. and Bengaluru Bulls. If U Mumba manage to win two of these three matches, then they will surely qualify for the knockouts.

Their hopes for one of the top two spots, realistically, can be ruled out. The first and the second positions are currently occupied by Jaipur Pink Panthers and Puneri Paltan, who have amassed 69 points each.

The top two teams will qualify directly for the semi-finals.

In an event where U Mumba manage to win only one match of the remaining four, the chances of them making it to the eliminator would be very slim.

Moreover, U Mumba’s season would come to an early end if they get only one win from their remaining matches and Dabang Delhi K.C., who are one spot better off, manage to get even two points from their last three contests.

If the above-mentioned scenario does come true, then the results of the other participants would be immaterial to U Mumba’s case.

Most tackle points in a single PKL match: Mohammadreza Shadloui Chiyaneh heads the list

The evening of November 19, 2022, will be remembered for a long time in the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) history for an astonishing feat.

In an encounter which proved to be a nightmare for the Dabang Delhi raiders, Patna Pirates’ Mohammadreza Shadloui Chiyaneh scored an astonishing 16 tackle points, to set the record for the most tackle points in a single PKL match.

Interestingly, Chiyaneh’s haul of 16 tackle points came entirely from Super Tackles. It’s also the record for the most Super Tackles in a single PKL match.

When a defending team is reduced to three or fewer players, executing a successful tackle earns the defender an extra point, hence a total of two points are awarded for a single tackle instead of one. Such two-point tackles are known as ‘Super Tackles’.

The Iranian managed to churn out eight of them under pressure, which speaks volumes about his performance in the contest. However, Chiyaneh’s lone resistance couldn’t take his team over the line as Dabang Delhi emerged victorious.

The record for the most tackle points in a single PKL match, nonetheless, changed hands. It was previously held jointly by Puneri Paltan’s Manjeet Chillar and another Patna Pirates player, Neeraj Kumar. Both had scored 11.

Manjeet Chillar scored 11 against his former team Bengaluru Bulls in a league phase clash during season 4. Chillar, who also features among the players with the most tackle points in PKL’s history, attempted 12 tackles in the match. None of these 11 tackle points, though, came in from super tackles.

Neeraj Kumar, meanwhile, marked his entry in the list during PKL season 7.

Playing against Puneri Paltan, Neeraj Kumar, one of the Pirates’ most expensive recruits that season, scored 11 tackle points in 2019. He would go on to finish as the franchise's top defender that campaign with 59 tackle points in 22 games.

U Mumba legend Surender Nada, one of the most decorated defenders in the tournament’s history, had custody of the record for most tackle points in a single PKL match before Manjeet Chillar knocked him off the perch in season 4.

In the season 2 semi-final clash against Patna Pirates, Surender Nada bagged 10 tackle points, including one Super Tackle, from 11 attempts to help U Mumba seal a spot in the final, where they eventually defeated Bengaluru Bulls to bag their maiden title.

Former Telugu Titans’ defender Sombir Gulia and Bengaluru Bulls man Mahender Singh also scored 10 tackle points each in a single match. Both managed the feat during season 5.

Only these six players have scored double-figure tackle points in a single PKL match in the tournament’s history.

Player  Tackle Points in a single match Team Opponents Year
Mohammadreza Shadloui Chiyaneh 16 Patna Pirates Dabang Delhi 2022
Manjeet Chhillar 11 Puneri Paltan Bengaluru Bulls 2016

Pro Kabaddi Season 9 unsold players: Sandeep Narwal, Rishank Devadiga among high-profile PKL 9 snubs

The Pro Kabaddi Season 9 auction was one to remember, with the record acquisition of Pawan Sehrawat crossing the INR 2 crore mark for the first time in PKL history.

Besides the major signings, there were a couple of notable players who surprisingly found no buyers during the two-day auction held on August 5 and 6.

More than 100 players went unsold at the Pro Kabaddi player auction and here we take a look at some eminent stars from past seasons who won’t feature in PKL 9.

Sandeep Narwal - All-rounder

Haryana-born kabaddi star Sandeep Narwal was one of the most shocking snubs at the Pro Kabaddi Season 9 auction. The all-rounder, with 149 games under his belt, played his part in Dabang Delhi K.C.’s triumphant campaign in 2021, as he registered 38 tackle points and 26 raid points.

Known for his signature ‘Block’ move, Sandeep Narwal’s absence could perhaps come back to haunt Delhi as they eye a successful defence of their title in Pro Kabaddi Season 9.

Rohit Kumar - Raider

Rohit Kumar, one of the finest raiders in PKL history and a former MVP, failed to attract any bids during the auction.

Having aggregated at least 100 points between Seasons 3-7, injuries and poor form limited Rohit to only 18 points in eight games for Telugu Titans in PKL 8.

Rohit's horrendous campaign last year meant no team was willing to add him to their squad for Season 9.

Sukesh Hegde - Raider

Sukesh Hegde is another veteran raider who will miss out in PKL Season 9.

Hegde, a champion with Bengal Warriors in Season 7, was released for the upcoming season despite having a career haul of 471 raid points in 115 matches.

With Bengal Warriors finishing outside the top six last season, Sukesh Hegde was among the 19 players let go by the team as they eyed a new-look team for PKL 9. Despite being a seasoned name, no franchise seemed interested in recruiting him.

Rishank Devadiga - Raider

Mumbai-born Rishank Devadiga misses out on a Pro Kabaddi season for the first time in his career.

The raider, with 625 raid points and 47 tackle points to his name, saw a dip in form as he played just one game in PKL 8. This sent a wrong impression to franchises and they ignored him at the Pro Kabaddi Season 9 auction.

Hadi Oshtorak - Defender

One of the well-known overseas talents in Pro Kabaddi, Hadi Oshtorak is a top all-rounder who missed the cut from Category B players at the PKL 9 auctions.

The Iranian, known for his versatility on the mat, has recorded 127 tackle points in his career but only managed 18 tackle points in the previous campaign.

Oshtorak’s chances of finding a new team perhaps dwindled based on his performances in Pro Kabaddi Season 8 with his average tackle points dropping drastically.

Costliest buys of Pro Kabaddi Season 9: Pawan Sehrawat breaches two crore mark

The Pro Kabaddi Season 9 auction saw prices for talents skyrocket as four players earned bids in excess of one crore.

While Pardeep Narwal was re-signed by UP Yoddhas for INR 90 lakh after the franchise used their Final Bid Match (FBM) card, Pawan Sehrawat’s INR 2.26 crore bid by Tamil Thalaivas broke the all-time PKL record.

Iranian legend Fazel Atrachali also made the news as he became the most expensive defender and overseas player in Pro Kabaddi, at INR 1.38 crore after breaking his own previous record.

Here, we take a look at Pro Kabaddi’s costliest players from the Season 9 auction.

Pawan Sehrawat - INR 2.26 crore

Pawan Sehrawat’s INR 2.26 crore bid by Tamil Thalaivas made him the all-time most expensive player in Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) history. Haryana Steelers and U Mumba were also interested in snapping the former Bengaluru Bulls star, but the Thalaivas fought to the end to sign one of the leading raiders in PKL history.

As far as numbers go, Sehrawat joins his latest team with a career record of 986 raid points, 49 Super 10s and 29 Super Raids in 104 matches.

Vikash Kandola - INR 1.70 crore

Having let go of the influential Pawan Sehrawat, Bengaluru Bulls will aim to fill that sizable void in their attack with Vikash Kandola.

The Bulls paid INR 1.70 crore to sign him for PKL Season 9, and he arrives at Bengaluru after four seasons with Haryana Steelers. Kandola averages 7.75 raid points per game and as one of the strong raiders in the competition, he will look to propel the Bulls to victory this term.

Fazel Atracheli - INR 1.38 crore

Former U Mumba captain Fazel Atracheli was the first player to breach the one-crore mark at the Pro Kabaddi Season 9 auction.

The Iranian star defender was subject of an intense bidding war between Telugu Titans and Dabang Delhi K.C., but in the end, Puneri Paltan swooped in and got his signature for INR 1.38 crore.

Known for his ability to hold down attackers on the mat, Fazel will start PKL season 9 as the most expensive defender and the costliest overseas talent in Pro Kabaddi history.

Guman Singh - INR 1.21 crore

Guman Singh was a surprise name among the players who fetched bids in excess of one crore at the PKL Season 9 auction.

Last turning out for Patna Pirates in Season 8, Guman is a raider who impressed onlookers with 97 points from 19 games. This included 95 raid points and four Super 10s.

With Pro Kabaddi Season 9 set to be his third campaign, all eyes will be fixed on Guman Singh as he will be one of the players to watch, especially with his hefty price in mind.

Pardeep Narwal - INR 90 lakh

For someone who was the most expensive player at PKL Season 8 auction, eyebrows were raised when Pardeep Narwal was announced as part of the released players' list for the Pro Kabaddi Season 9 auction.

The ‘Dubki King’ was, however, re-signed by UP Yoddhas after they used their Final Bid Match (FBM) card to sign him for INR 90 lakh.

Pardeep Narwal is the only player in PKL to score over 1000 raid points and he will hope to guide UP Yoddhas further in 2022 than he managed last time around.

Pro Kabaddi’s costliest players in Season 9 (top 10)

Player Team Fee

Vikash Kandola Bengaluru Bulls INR 1.70 crore
Fazel Atracheli Puneri Paltan INR 1.38 crore

India dominate Kabaddi World Cup winners list

The Kabaddi World Cup winners list is dominated by the Indian men’s Kabaddi team, who have clinched three titles in Standard style and six championships in Circle style.

Kabaddi world cup is usually conducted in two styles - the Standard style and the Circle style

Organized by the International Kabaddi Federation (IKF), the inaugural edition of the kabaddi world cup in Standard style was held in Mumbai in 2004. India defeated Iran 55-27 in the final to clinch the inaugural title.

As per the format of the tournament, five teams are divided into two pools with the top two teams from each group qualifying for the semi-finals.

Since the inception of the tournament, India have won all the three Kabaddi World Cup titles in Standard style in 2004, 2007 and 2016.

Year Host Winner Score Runner-up
2004 Mumbai India 55-27 Iran
2007 Panvel India 29-19 Iran

Meanwhile, the circle style kabaddi world cup is an international kabaddi competition administered by the Government of Punjab in India.

The tournament has been held every year since it was founded in 2010 except for 2015 due to the Guru Granth Sahib desecration controversy.

India have won six of the seven circle style Kabaddi World Cups while Pakistan have clinched the last edition of the tournament in 2020.

From army trial to becoming a PKL lakhpati: Know Arjun Deshwal’s journey as a kabaddi player

Arjun Deshwal is an Indian kabaddi player who plays for the Jaipur Pink Panthers team in Pro Kabaddi and represents Services in Senior National Kabaddi Championship. He is currently the third-most most expensive player in Pro Kabaddi Season 8 at INR 96 lakhs.

Role of guru in shaping career

Arjun Deshwal was born on July 7, 1999, at the Basera village in Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh. Ever since his childhood, Arjun was fond of playing various sports although he indulged in cricket the most in his early years. It was only later after his guru started guiding him and developing his skills, did Arjun grow an interest in kabaddi.

“Since a young age I was fond of playing different sports but my family actually pushed me into kabaddi,” Arjun Deshwal said in an interview with Lallantop Sports.

“I didn’t like playing kabaddi initially and used to go to the ground nearby my house and play cricket there. My guru who belonged to my family then slowly started working on my kabaddi skills. He was the one who had faith in my abilities and backed me to do well.”

From there on, Arjun hasn’t looked back and has managed to rise through the ranks from district to state level before announcing his arrival in the sport’s grandest stage - Pro Kabaddi.

Entering the world’s biggest league - Pro Kabaddi

His big breakthrough, though, came somewhat via chance. At the age of 18, Arjun Deshwal went to Roorkee in Uttarakhand for an army trial. While at the trial, he impressed everyone with his performances and even joined the army under the kabaddi sports quota. And it was his stint with the army where he discovered how he can enroll in Pro Kabaddi.

“No one from my village had earlier featured in Pro Kabaddi. I had earlier represented UP in Senior Nationals but the job offer by the army is where I actually came to know about the registration process for the Pro Kabaddi auction.”

As things turned out, Arjun Deshwal was signed by U Mumba for INR 8 lakhs in the Pro Kabaddi Season 6 auction. However, an injury meant he could play just three matches in his debut Pro Kabaddi season.

The following year, Arjun featured more regularly for U Mumba and returned with 109 raid points from 19 matches. Although his performances were far from exemplary, his performances didn’t go unnoticed.

The young raider, in fact, had done enough to earn plaudits within kabaddi circles for his exceptional raiding skills and was earmarked as one for the future.

Transformation to a household name and lakhpati

The Pro Kabaddi Season 8 auction saw teams breaking the bank on Arjun Deshwal. Eventually, it was Jaipur Pink Panthers who managed to snap the former U Mumba player for a whopping INR 96 lakhs, close to four times his previous season price.

“Before the lockdown, I had done well for Services in Senior National Kabaddi Championship in 2019. U Mumba were interested in retaining me (ahead of Season 8) but my family insisted to try registering for the auction instead. I was initially nervous since it was the first time I was entering an auction pool not knowing what to expect. I was confident of the auction panning out well but never had I imagined to go for that much money (INR 96 lakhs).”

By the end of the three-day auction, Arjun Deshwal emerged as the third-most-expensive player in Pro Kabaddi Season 8.

Destined to achieve greatness

A big and productive season with Jaipur Pink Panthers in Pro Kabaddi Season 8 has now put Arjun in contention for the national reckoning alongside some of the finest talents of the country.

However, the mark of true champions are cemented through the consistency of their performances and it remains to be seen how Arjun sustains his displays with the blinding lights and the pressure associated with the sport. That said, it’s worth remembering that he’s a player with the world at his feet and an abundance of confidence in his own ability.

And since self-belief and talent are both pre-requisites for any athlete to live up to his or her billing, there isn’t any reason why Arjun shouldn’t be considered PKL’s next star in making. After all, it wasn’t so long ago that even the likes of Pardeep Narwal, Pawan Sehrawat and Naveen Kumar were relative nobodies and found themselves in a similar place to where Arjun is at now.
