The Indian men's hockey team will begin their Tokyo 2020 Olympics campaign against New Zealand on July 24.

Led by Manpreet Singh, India will look to end their 41-year medal drought at the Summer Games having secured their last gold medal in the event by beating Spain 4-3 at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

India is among 12 nations that will compete in men's hockey event at the Tokyo Olympics and they have been divided into two groups of six teams each.

While Men in Blue have been clubbed in Group A alongside hosts Japan, Argentina, Australia, Spain and New Zealand, Group B comprises four-time champions Germany, three-time winners Great Britain, Belgium, Netherlands, Canada and South Africa.

Since the tournament’s inception in 1908, India has been the most successful team in the competition with eight gold medals, one silver and two bronze medals.

In the group stage, every team will play five matches with the top four teams qualifying for the knockout stage. As per the schedule, quarter-finals and semi-finals are slated to take place on August 1 and 3 respectively.

The bronze medal and the gold medal matches at Tokyo Olympics will take place on August 5.

All the men’s hockey matches will be played at the Oi Hockey Stadium's North and South pitch.

Meanwhile, Argentina head into Tokyo 2020 as defending champions as they defeated Belgium 4-2 to bag gold at Rio Olympics in 2016.
