Boxing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will start on July 24 and will run till August 8. There are a total of 13 different categories between men and women, with India sending nine boxers, featuring five men and four women, to the World Games. It is going to be India’s biggest contingent in boxing at the Olympics.

While it took time for India to assert its claim in boxing at the Summer Games, Vijender Singh’s bronze medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympics was a turning point. Four years later, veteran pugilist MC Mary Kom stood on the podium when she won the bronze medal in London.

Heading into Tokyo 2020, the Indian contingent has fared reasonably well and the likes of Amit Panghal and Mary Kom do stand a chance of winning a medal. Pangal is, in fact, the top-seeded pugilist in Men's 52-kg category.

The other seeded Indian boxer is Simranjit Kaur, who is seeded sixth and will compete in her first bout on July 27 in the women’s lightweight category in the round of 32.

The Indian contingent will begin the action with Lovlina Borgohain (Women’s Welterweight Round of 32), Vikas Krishan Yadav (Men’s Welterweight Round of 32) and Satish Kumar (Men’s Super Heavyweight Round of 32) on Saturday, June 24.

Mary Kom’s first bout is slated to take place on July 25, while Amit Panghal will enter the ring on July 26.

The preliminary rounds will continue until 27 July before it reaches the final 16. The medal events will start on July 31.
