Indian shooters Anjum Moudgil and Tejaswini Sawant will compete in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions event at Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Saturday, July 31.

Partnering Deepak Kumar, Anjum Moudgil had a disappointing start to her Tokyo 2020 campaign as the duo failed to qualify for the final of the 10m air rifle mixed team event. Anjum and Deepak finished 18th in the first qualifications stage of the 10m air rifle mixed team event with an aggregate score of 623.8 at the Asaka Range.

Meanwhile, Tejaswini will make her debut Olympic appearance in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions event, which requires shooters to take 40 shots each in the kneeling, proning and standing positions in the qualification round.

While Anjum is currently ranked 27th in the world in the event, her compatriot Tejaswini is ranked 28th.

The 40-year-old Tejaswini won the World Championship in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions in 2010. She has also bagged three gold medals, three silvers and one bronze in various events at multiple Commonwealth Games.

On the other hand, Anjum won a silver medal in the women's 50m Rifle 3 positions event at the ISSF World Cup in 2018. The 27-year-old also claimed a silver medal in the same event at the Commonwealth Games in 2018.

The Indian duo will face tough competition from the likes of current world champion Yulia Karimova, world no. 1 Nina Christen and world no. 3 Yulia Zykova.

Despite sending a 15-member Indian shooting contingent to Tokyo 2020, the shooters are yet to bag a medal in the ongoing quadrennial event. Pressure will be on Anjum Moudgil and Tejaswini Sawant to redeem India's faltering shooting campaign in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions event.

The top eight shooters in qualification will advance to the final, where they must take a further 15 shots in each position.
