From most runs to best bowling figures: Know every ODI record at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi

The Arun Jaitley Stadium is an international cricket venue located at the Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg in New Delhi, India.

Established in 1883, the stadium was earlier known as the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium and is the second oldest international cricket stadium in India after the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Located near the Kotla Fort, the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium was renamed to Arun Jaitley Stadium in September 2019 in memory of former Finance Minister of India and former Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) President Arun Jaitley.

The stadium hosted its first international match, a Test between India and West Indies, in November 1948. Since then, the venue has staged 34 Tests, 26 ODIs and seven T20Is. It has also hosted several Indian T20 League matches since the inception of the league in 2008.

The Arun Jaitley Stadium is the home ground of the Delhi cricket team and Delhi franchise in the Indian T20 League.

Here, we look at the ODI records at this venue.

Arun Jaitley Stadium ODI records and stats

Highest total: South Africa holds the record for the highest total in ODIs at this venue. In the fourth match of the 2023 World Cup in India, the Proteas were asked to bat by Sri Lanka at the toss. South Africa would make the Lankans regret their decision as they powered to a total of 428/5 - the highest on this ground in ODIs. Centuries from Quinton de Kock (100), Rassie van der Dussen (108), and Aiden Markram (106) powered the Proteas to such a mammoth total and helped set up a 102-run win.

Lowest total: South Africa’s 99 against hosts India is the lowest ODI total at this venue. Put into bat, South Africa lost wickets at regular intervals as they were bundled out for a disappointing score. Kuldeep Yadav was the wrecker-in-chief for India as he picked four wickets for just 18 runs in his 4.1 overs. Washington Sundar, Mohammed Siraj and Shahbaz Ahmed bagged two wickets each. For South Africa, Heinrich Klaasen top scored with 34 off 42 balls.

Highest total to best bowling: Test records at Old Trafford Cricket Ground

The Old Trafford Cricket Ground has been a relatively happy hunting ground for the English side over the years with only Australia enjoying a better head-to-head record against the hosts in Tests at the venue. England have beaten Australia seven times at the venue in Tests and lost on eight occasions against the Aussies in Manchester.

Established in 1857, Old Trafford was opened as a home ground for Manchester Cricket Club and has been Lancashire County Cricket Club’s home since 1864.

It is England’s second oldest Test venue after The Oval and had staged the first Ashes Test against Australia in July 1884. From the first of Sachin Tendulkar’s 100 international tons to Shane Warne’s Ball of the Century to Mike Gatting, the Old Trafford Cricket Ground has witnessed plenty of memorable Test moments over the years.

The Old Trafford Cricket Ground has hosted five ICC Cricket World Cups - 1975, 1979, 1983, 1999 and 2019. Furthermore, the venue has played host to most World Cup Cricket matches (17) by any ground and holds the record for hosting the most number of World Cup semi-finals (5) as well.

Let’s have a look at some Test records made at Old Trafford Cricket Ground.

Old Trafford Cricket Ground Test records

Highest team score: The Australian cricket team posted the highest score in a Test match at Old Trafford. The visitors rode on captain Bob Simpson’s scintillating triple hundred (311) to record the mammoth total of 656/8d against England in the fourth Test in 1964. The match ended in a draw.

Lowest team total: India were bundled out for 58 against England in their first innings of the third Test at Old Trafford in 1952. Fast bowler Fred Trueman was the destroyer-in-chief for England, picking eight wickets for 31 runs in India’s first innings. The Vijay Hazare-led India team lost the Test by an innings and 207 runs.

Most runs: Denis Compton has made the most runs at Old Trafford. The former England batter played eight Tests at Old Trafford and scored 818 runs at an average of 81.80. He made three hundreds and four fifties at the venue.

Most wickets: Former England fast bowler Alec Bedser has taken the most wickets in Tests at Old Trafford. In seven matches, Bedser took 51 wickets at an average of 13.45 and an economy of 2.26.

Highest individual score: Former Australia captain Bob Simpson holds the record for the highest individual score at Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Tests. Playing a staggering 743 balls, Simpson had scored 311 runs against hosts England in the first innings of the fourth Test in Manchester. Simpson’s 311 powered Australia to 656/8d, the highest team total at this venue in Test cricket. In reply, England had managed 611 in their first innings.

Best bowling figures: Former England spinner Jim Laker became the first cricketer to claim a 10-wicket haul in a single innings at Old Trafford in 1956. Laker bagged a total of 19 wickets against Australia in the Test match, which is still the best-ever bowling figures in Tests and first-class cricket. Laker’s figures of 9 for 37 and 10 for 53 in the match helped England win the Test by an innings and 170 runs. Jim Laker's 19 for 90 in the game is also the best bowling figures in a match at Old Trafford.

Highest partnership: England’s Michael Vaughan (120) and Graham Thorpe (138) stitched a 267-run partnership for the third wicket against Pakistan in their first innings of the second Test in 2001. It remains the highest Test partnership at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground to date. However, England suffered a 108-run defeat in that match.

Relive the Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s best knocks in ODI cricket

The God of Cricket Sachin Tendulkar has innumerable records in the game, some of which are destined to stand the test of time.

The player with the most runs and centuries in ODIs and Tests, Tendulkar is also the only player in cricketing history to score 100 international hundreds.

The first player to score a double-century in 50-over international cricket, Sachin Tendulkar’s highest score in ODI cricket came against South Africa in February 2010 when he made an unbeaten 200 against the Proteas.

Even though other players have gone past his 200 not out since he made the score, the Indian legend will always have the distinction of being the first-ever to reach the 200-run mark in an inning in 50-over international cricket.

Tendulkar, of course, has played numerous sensational knocks in the ODI format. His Desert Storm knocks in Sharjah, and his ODI World Cup innings’, particularly, in the 2003 edition are a couple of examples of his top-quality innings’ in the 50-over format.

However, here we have a look at the Master Blaster’s best five innings in terms of the most runs made in ODI cricket. So without further ado, let’s check out Sachin Tendulkar’s highest score in ODI cricket.

Sachin Tendulkar highest score in ODIs

Sachin Tendulkar’s 200* vs South Africa, 2010

The Little Master’s unbeaten 200 against South Africa in February 2010 completely floored the Proteas as India posted 401/3 after batting first in Gwalior. He took just 147 balls to score his double century and it included 25 fours and three sixes. In reply, South Africa could only manage 248 before being bundled out as India took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Sachin Tendulkar’s 186* vs New Zealand, 1999

Tendulkar almost scored the first double ton in ODIs way back in November 1999 against New Zealand. Batting first in the second game of a five-match series against the Kiwis, Sachin Tendulkar produced another masterclass by scoring an unbeaten 150-ball 186, which included 20 fours and three sixes. His knock helped India post 376/2 and in reply, New Zealand could only manage 202 before being skittled out as the Men in Blue levelled the series at 1-1.

Sachin Tendulkar’s 175 vs Australia, 2009

Set a target of 351 to chase by the Aussies in November 2009 in Hyderabad, Tendulkar was almost the lone warrior for India in the chase as he scored 175, which included 19 fours and four sixes. He was dismissed by Clint McKay in the 48th over of the chase and India’s hopes perished with his return to the pavilion as Suresh Raina’s run-a-ball 59 was the only other contribution of substance by the Indian batters. India was eventually all out for 347 as Australia took a 3-2 lead in the seven-match series.

Sachin Tendulkar’s 163* vs New Zealand, 2009

Sachin Tendulkar was once again the difference between the teams when India took on New Zealand at Christchurch in the third game of a five-match series in March 2009. Put in to bat first, the Indian legend made the Kiwis pay by scoring an unbeaten 133-ball 163. His knock featured 16 fours and five sixes before Tendulkar retired hurt as India went on to post 392/4. Tendulkar’s Player of the Match performance gave India a 58-run win to take a 2-0 lead in the series.

Sachin Tendulkar’s 152 vs Namibia, 2003

During a 2003 ODI World Cup game against Namibia in February, Tendulkar was at his brilliant best and scored a 151-ball 152 to help India post 311/2 on the scoreboard. He smashed 18 fours over the course of his knock and deservedly took home the Player of the Match award after Namibia managed just 130 in the chase, giving India a comprehensive 181-run win.

From Brendon McCullum to Virender Sehwag, know the cricketers to hit most sixes in Tests

England all-rounder and Test captain Ben Stokes has hit the most sixes in Tests. He recently overtook Brendon McCullum to take top spot for most sixes in Tests.

Stokes, who is captaining England in Tests, is likely to extend his lead for sixes in Test cricket with a lot of red-ball cricket ahead of him.

Stokes, in fact, went past McCullum's record with the New Zealander as the coach of the English Test team. England's aggressive style of Test cricket means that Stoke is likely to finish his career with a sizeable lead as far as sixes in Tests go.

Meanwhile, after making his Test debut against South Africa in 2004, Brendon McCullum smashed 107 sixes in the 101 Tests that he played.

Considered to be one of the most destructive batters in modern cricket history, the former New Zealand captain amassed 6,453 runs in 101 matches at an average of 38.64. His strike rate in Tests was a healthy 64.6.

Interestingly, McCullum holds the record for the fastest Test century, having reached the milestone off just 54 balls against arch-rivals Australia in Christchurch in 2016. He was eventually dismissed for 145 off just 79 balls, which included 21 fours and six sixes.

McCullum features fourth on the list of most sixes in international cricket, having smashed 398 sixes in 474 matches. Only West Indies’ Chris Gayle (553), Shahid Afridi of Pakistan (476) and India’s Rohit Sharma (464) have hit more sixes in international cricket.

Former Australian wicket-keeper batter Adam Gilchrist has also hit 100 sixes in Tests.

While Gilchrist clobbered 100 sixes in 96 Tests, Stokes has smashed the same number of sixes in just 82 Tests.

Chris Gayle and former South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis complete the top five list of most sixes in Tests. Gayle hit 98 sixes in the 103 Test matches that he played while Kallis smashed 97 sixes in 166 Tests.

Virender Sehwag has hit the most sixes in Test match cricket for an Indian. The former opening batter hit 91 sixes in 104 Tests and features sixth on the list of most sixes in Tests. Sehwag managed 243 sixes in 374 matches in international cricket.

Meanwhile, MS Dhoni features second on the list of most sixes by Indians in Tests. The former India captain smashed 78 sixes in the 90 Tests that he played between 2005 and 2014.

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar is third on the list of most sixes by Indians in Tests. Having made his Test debut against Pakistan in 1989, Tendulkar hit 69 sixes in 200 Tests. The India cricket legend ended his illustrious career with 264 sixes in 664 matches.

Rohit Sharma and Kapil Dev complete the top five list of most sixes by Indians in Tests. While Rohit has smashed 66 sixes in just 46 Test matches, Kapil Dev hit 61 sixes in 131 Tests.

Fastest to 25000 international runs: Virat Kohli’s 549-innings feat shatters record

Run-scoring is not just an art, but a result of grit, determination, perseverance and, of course, skill. Sachin Tendulkar has been revered as God of Cricket for many years due to his ability to consistently pile on runs.

Tendulkar, in fact, was the first cricketer to score 25000 runs in international cricket. It was one of the many records the Master Blaster achieved in his career. Over the years, the Indian legend was joined by Australia’s Ricky Ponting, South Africa’s Jacques Kallis and the Sri Lankan duo of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene in the list of players with more than 25000 international runs. However, Tendulkar remains the only player with 30000-plus runs in international cricket.

Meanwhile, India’s Virat Kohli is now the latest entrant in the ‘25K club’ after crossing the mark in the second Test against Australia on February 19, 2023, at his home ground - the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Kohli is the fastest cricketer to 25000 international runs, recording the feat in only 549 innings. The previous record of 577 innings, 28 more than Kohli, was set by Tendulkar.

Kohli is also the fastest to 12000 ODI runs, after achieving the feat in just 251 matches.

Sachin Tendulkar - 25000 international runs in 577 innings

Sachin Tendulkar, meanwhile, held the record for the fastest to 25000 international runs for more than 17 years. The Master Blaster finished with 34257 runs as an international cricketer, 6341 runs more than the next best - Kumar Sangakkara.

Tendulkar also boasts the record of the most runs in Test and ODI formats, scoring 15921 and 18426 runs, respectively. The Mumbai-born batter is the only cricketer with 100 centuries in international cricket.

The former Indian batter maintained an average of 48.52 at this level in a 24-year international career.

Australia’s Ricky Ponting is the fastest and the only Aussie cricketer with 25000 international runs. The former skipper played 560 matches at this level, amassing 27483 runs, making him the third-highest run-getter in international cricket.

He also led the Australian cricket team to the no.1 spot in the ICC Test rankings, while also lifting multiple 50-over World Cup titles.

Shahid Afridi - 351 sixes in ODI cricket

Considered to be one of the most destructive cricketers that have graced the sport, Shahid ‘Boom Boom’ Afridi smashed 351 maximums in 398 matches between 1996 and 2015.

Apart from Pakistan, the swashbuckling batter also featured for Asia XI and ICC XI. Afridi amassed 8,064 ODI runs in 369 innings at a strike rate of 117 with six hundreds and 39 fifties to his name.

Chris Gayle - 331 sixes in ODI cricket

Second on the list for most sixes in ODI is former West Indies opening batter Chris Gayle. Having made his ODI debut in 1999 against India, the self-proclaimed ‘Universe Boss’ clobbered 331 sixes in 301 matches.

Gayle also played for ICC XI and aggregated 10,480 runs in 294 ODI innings at an average of 37.83. He made 25 tons and 54 half-centuries during his ODI career.

Rohit Sharma - 273 sixes in ODI cricket

Most ODI hundreds against one team: Indian cricketers dominate the list

The ODIs are one of the two limited-overs formats in international cricket where the batters have the liberty to play out a handful of balls to settle down before accelerating their innings, as compared to the T20Is where a player has to go all out from the first ball itself.

This leeway in the ODIs helps the batters to advance in their innings strategically and on a few occasions, convert it into a century.

There have been instances in international cricket where a batter enjoys playing against a certain nation more than others and has registered multiple centuries against them.

India cricket team batter Virat Kohli has scored 10 centuries against Sri Lanka in the 50-over format, making him the player with the most ODI hundreds against one team. Meanwhile, Sachin Tendulkar's nine tons against Australia also put him joint-second with Kohli, who has nine tons against the West Indies.

Virat Kohli India West Indies 9
Sachin Tendulkar India Australia 9
Rohit Sharma India Australia 8

Virat Kohli - 10 centuries vs Sri Lanka, nine vs West Indies

Indian cricket team batter, who is the only active batter with 10,000-plus runs in ODIs, has scored 10 hundreds against Sri Lanka so far.

Interestingly, Sri Lanka are the opposition against whom Virat Kohli recorded his maiden ODI century in December 2009, a year after he made his international debut against the same team.

The right-handed batter scored four more centuries versus the Lankans in 2012. Kohli’s first century against the West Indies came in December 2011. He also struck three tons against the Windies in 2018 and two in 2019.

The former India captain averages 60-plus in ODIs against Sri Lanka and West Indies, which is more than any other team against whom he has played more than 30 ODIs.

Sachin Tendulkar - nine centuries vs Australia

Widely regarded as the God of Cricket, Sachin Tendulkar made Aussies his favourite opponents in 50-over cricket, smashing nine of his 49 ODI centuries against the formidable opponents, his most against a single opponent.

Australia is the opponent against whom Tendulkar registered his maiden ODI century in September 1994. He scored three tons against the Aussies in 1998 is the most he managed against them in a year.

The little master’s 175 against Australia in November 2009 can be considered among his best ODI knocks, albeit in a losing cause.

Following a lean patch compared to his high standards of just eight centuries between 2004 and 2009, Tendulkar’s selection in the team came under immense scrutiny. He answered his critics in style with a swashbuckling knock as India fell just short of the massive 351-run target against Australia.

Three months later in February 2010, he became the first batter to score a double century in ODIs (200* vs South Africa), helping his team record one of the highest ODI team totals in the history of the format.

Rohit Sharma - eight centuries vs Australia

Rohit Sharma has hit eight centuries against Australia so far in a stunning ODI career.

The hitman, who holds the record for most double tons (3) in ODIs, all of which feature among the fastest double centuries in ODIs, recorded his first against the mighty Australians in November 2013.

In January 2016, he made 171* at Perth, which was the then-record for the highest ODI score against Australia by a visiting batter. His most recent ODI ton also came against Australia in 2020.
