Portugal take on Czech Republic on matchday 3 of the UEFA Nations League 2022-23 at the iconic Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon in the early hours of Friday, June 10. The match will kick-off at 12:15 AM IST (Indian Standard Time).

Now the matches are being played at regular intervals, Portugal boss Fernando Santos may look to rotate his men for this clash. This potentially means an ageing Pepe could be given a much-needed rest. The likes of Bernardo Silva and Rafael Leao might also return to the first team after coming on as substitutes against Switzerland.

For Czech Republic, the team is still sweating over the fitness of both their left-backs who went off injured against Spain last time out.

Portugal vs Czech Republic head-to-head

Since their first-ever meeting in June 1996, Portugal and the Czech Republic have played just three games against each other. During this time, Portugal have won two while the Czechs have come out on top on a solitary occasion.

Interestingly, none of their past three outings have been international friendlies. On the contrary, they have only met in three UEFA Euro editions.

While Portugal may be stretched thin at the back, the quality of their offence, especially with the talismanic Cristiano Ronaldo leading the lines, can more than make up for that. That makes the former European champions overwhelming favourites to win the clash.

The Czechs, meanwhile, are expected to deploy a similar defensive tactic that they did against Spain to try and eke out a point from the contest.
