The 2022 FA Community Shield match between last season’s FA Cup winners, Liverpool, and defending Premier League champions Manchester City will be played at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, July 30. The match will kick off at 9:30 PM IST.

Saturday’s match is going to be Manchester City’s second consecutive appearance in the Community Shield match after losing out to Leicester City at Wembley Stadium in 2021.

For City, it’s been confirmed that new signings Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips, Julian Alvarez and Stefan Ortega Moreno are all in line to make their competitive debut.

Meanwhile, the likes of Phil Foden, Ilkay Gundogan, John Stones and Aymeric Laporte, who were all absent from the US tour, will now be available for selection for Pep Guardiola.

On the other hand, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that the Reds will miss the services of Diogo Jota, but mentioned that goalkeeper Alisson Becker is closing on his return.

"Obviously Diogo is not here, that's clear. But from the boys who are injured but are here, Ali is the closest,” Klopp was quoted as saying.

Although the Brazilian has resumed training at Liverpool’s camp in Austria, he hasn’t featured for the team since the 0-4 defeat to Manchester United in Bangkok as he continues to recover from an abdominal injury.

For the first time in 10 years, the home of English football, Wembley Stadium, will not be hosting the Community Shield as the venue is being used in the Women’s European Championship. As a result, the Community Shield clash was moved to Leicester City’s King Power Stadium.

Liverpool vs Manchester City head-to-head

Since their first-ever meeting in September 1893, Liverpool and Manchester City have played a total of 220 games across all competitions, with the former winning 106 while the Cityzens have come out on top on 58 occasions. As many as 56 matches between the teams have ended in a draw.

Interestingly enough, City are without a win against Liverpool since February 2021. Their previous meeting came in last season’s FA Cup semi-final where a brace from Sadio Mane and a goal from Ibrahima Konate guided the Reds to a narrow 3-2 win.

Furthermore, the Premier League heavyweights have crossed paths in the Community Shield just once in the past; in August 2019. Raheem Sterling opened the scoring for Man City before Joel Matip brought Liverpool back on level terms. The match was eventually decided through penalties, with City winning 5-4.
