Indian Super League (ISL) outfit ATK Mohun Bagan will host I-League champions Gokulam Kerala in their first Group D match of AFC Cup 2022 at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Wednesday, May 18.
The Mariners had earned the rights to play the AFC Cup 2022 qualifiers after finishing second in the ISL 2020-21 standings.
ATK Mohun Bagan qualified for the group stage of the tournament after defeating Bangladeshi club Abahani Limited Dhaka 3-1 in the AFC Cup 2022 qualifiers playoff match and Sri Lanka’s Blue Star SC 5-0 in the Preliminary round 2.
ATKMB’s fellow Indian club Gokulam Kerala qualified directly for the main tournament courtesy winning the I-League 2020-21.
Apart from ATK Mohun Bagan and Gokulam Kerala, Group D of AFC Cup 2022 also features Bangladesh’s Bashundhara Kings and Maziya S&RC of the Maldives.
As per the schedule, the Mariners will face reigning Bangladeshi domestic football champions Bashundhara Kings on May 21 followed by their clash against Maziya on May 24. The table-topper will qualify for the inter-zone semi-finals while the other three teams will be eliminated from the competition.
All Group D matches of AFC Cup 2022 will be played at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.
ATK Mohun Bagan had made an impressive AFC Cup debut last term, topping Group D before suffering a humiliating 0-6 defeat to Uzbek side FC Nasaf, the eventual runner ups, in the inter-zone play-off semi-final.
