The 2021-22 League Winners’ Shield champions Jamshedpur FC hold the record for most points in one ISL season. It was during the 2021-22 Indian Super League campaign that the Red Miners finished the league stage with an impressive 43 points out of a possible 60.
Playing under the management of Owen Coyle, Jamshedpur FC didn’t have the greatest of starts as they began their ISL 2021-22 season with a 1-1 draw against SC East Bengal.
Following a 3-1 win over FC Goa next, the team succumbed again to a 1-1 draw before getting the better of ATK Mohun Bagan with a 2-1 scoreline. However, early-season inconsistency meant that they were beaten 2-4 by the defending champions Mumbai City FC soon after.
It wasn’t until January 2022 that the team managed to find a stable footing. With the teams around them struggling for consistency, the Red Miners gained momentum and despite a 0-1 defeat versus Chennaiyin FC and a 1-3 setback against Bengaluru FC, they managed to finish the league stage at the top of the table with 13 wins out of 20 following a flourish in the business end of the season.
Going unbeaten in their last seven outings, Owen Coyle’s men ended the league stage with 43 points.
The second spot in the list for most points in one ISL season belongs to as many as three different teams. During the 2020-21 ISL campaign, eventual champions Mumbai City FC and finalists ATK Mohun Bagan finished with 40 points each.
During the 2020-21 season, both teams won 12 of their 20 league stage games, drawing four and losing four. If it wasn’t for a 0-2 defeat against the Islanders in their final league stage game, the Mariners would have finished on top of the standings with 43 points.
The first team to ever touch the 40-point mark in the ISL was Bengaluru FC. The Blues, during their first-ever ISL season, won 13 of the then 18 league stage games. Led by Sunil Chhetri, the team lost four matches and played a solitary draw throughout the season. In terms of games played, Bengaluru have the best points to games ratio in ISL history.
Lastly, the 2019-20 ISL League Winners’ Shield champions FC Goa occupy the fifth spot in the list for most points in one ISL season. The Guars, who progressed till the semi-final round in the 2019-20 season, accrued 39 points after winning 12 of their 18 league stage matches.
