The Indian T20 League 2021 saw its first super-over on Sunday when the Delhi vs Hyderabad clash failed to find a winner in the regulation 40 overs. After Delhi batted first to score 159 runs, Hyderabad rode on Kane Williamson’s heroics to tie the match, forcing a Super Over.

However, Rishabh Pant ensured that Delhi chased down their Super Over target of eight runs in six balls to claim their fourth win this season. Earlier, David Warner and Kane Williamson could score only seven runs for Hyderabad against a shrewd bowling spell by Axar Patel.

So far, the Indian T20 league has seen 14 Super Overs, with the first coming in the second edition of the tournament in 2009 when the tournament was held in South Africa. Kolkata and Rajasthan played out a tie, scoring 150 runs in their 20 overs at Cape Town to bring out the first Super Over of the tournament.

Interestingly, Kane Williamson’s misfortune in super-overs continued on Sunday as this was the sixth instance in T20 cricket that the batsman ended up on the losing side.

After playing a match-saving knock of 66 runs off 51 balls while chasing 160 runs, the Kiwi skipper was brought in ahead of Jonny Bairstow alongside Warner. Williamson struck Hyderabad’s only boundary on the Super Over but it didn’t prove to be enough.

"I am getting tired of coming second in the Super Overs," Kane Williamson said in the post-match press conference.

Kane Williamson was also a part of the New Zealand cricket team that made its way to the final of the 2019 ICC ODI World Cup. The Kiwis lost the final to England in the Super Over.

T20 internationals has seen 16 Super Overs so far, with the first one dating back to 2008 in a match between New Zealand and West Indies. After both the teams had scored 155 runs in their allotted 20 overs, West Indies won the Super Over.
