Adda Notes: Mumbai’s superior record at Chepauk gives them an edge vs Punjab

Defending champions Mumbai will look to return to winning ways when they take on bottom-placed Punjab in their fifth match of the Indian T20 League 2021 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, April 23.

The Rohit-Sharma-led side succumbed to defeat against Delhi following an inept batting performance and will look for redemption. The form of their famed middle-order will be a major concern for the five-time champions.

Mumbai are currently fourth in the Indian T20 League 2021 points table with four points, winning two and losing their other two matches.

Punjab, on the other hand, have lost three consecutive matches after a winning start. Apart from captain KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal, their batters have struggled in the ongoing edition of the tournament. Spearheaded by India pacer Mohammed Shami, their bowling department has also been below-par so far.

In Punjab vs Mumbai head-to-head record in the Indian T20 League, Rohit Sharma’s side has a clear edge as they have won 15 of the 26 matches played between these two sides.

Additionally, Mumbai have a decent record playing at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The five-time champions have won seven of their 12 matches (58.33%) at this venue. 

On the contrary, the 2014 finalists Punjab have a dismal record at the Chepauk. The franchise has won just 28.57% of their matches - securing just two wins in seven encounters.

Furthermore, Mumbai have won three of their last five matches against Punjab in the Indian T20 League.

In the batting department, Punjab captain KL Rahul will be the player to watch out for against Mumbai on Friday. Rahul has an incredible record against Rohit Sharma’s side, amassing 580 runs in just 12 matches at a staggering average of 64.44. The 29-year-old has hit one century and four fifties against the five-time champions.

On the other hand, Mumbai will bank on their captain Rohit Sharma to play another match-winning innings against Punjab at Chepauk. The 33-year-old has scored 669 runs in 24 innings against Punjab, with six fifties to his name. 

As far as bowling is concerned, Punjab pacer Mohammed Shami has a decent record against Mumbai. Shami has picked nine wickets in eight innings at an average of 26.78 against Rohit Sharma’s side.

For Mumbai, Jasprit Bumrah is tipped to be the wrecker-in-chief for his side against Punjab at Chepauk. The 27-year-old fast bowler has bagged 17 wickets against Punjab at an economy of 6.26.

Going by current form, Mumbai will start as favourites against Punjab due to their head-to-head record and their oppositions’ poor track record in Chennai.
