The Ashes 2023 got underway after hosts England locked horns with arch-rivals Australia in the first Test of the five-match series at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham.

Since the first edition of Ashes in 1882-83, bowlers have played pivotal roles for their respective teams in deciding the outcome of the matches as well as the marquee Test series.

The upcoming Ashes series will also feature two world-class bowling attacks. Hosts England has the likes of James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Ollie Robinson, Mark Wood, Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali to pick up 20 wickets in every Test.

On the other hand, captain Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland and Nathan Lyon will play a key role for the World Test Championship (WTC) holders in Ashes 2023.

England’s right-arm pacer Stuart Broad has the most wickets in Ashes history among active cricketers.

Broad has already bagged 142 wickets in 37 Ashes Tests, with eight five-wicket hauls to his name. He also scalped 13 wickets in the previous edition of Ashes.

England’s bowling spearhead James Anderson has an impressive record in Ashes history. Anderson has claimed 115 wickets in 37 Ashes Tests.

For Australia, Nathan Lyon will be extremely effective to make use of the dry pitches in the UK. From 2013 to now, the off-spinner has scalped more than 100 wickets in the Ashes.

Meanwhile, Australia captain Pat Cummins finished as the leading wicket-taker in the last Ashes series in 2021-22. Cummins took 21 wickets in four Tests, two more than his compatriot Mitchell Starc in the previous edition.

Here’s a look at the leading wicket-takers in Ashes 2023.
