India dominates most bilateral ODI series wins list

The record for most bilateral ODI series wins is held by the Indian cricket team, with 73 series victories.

Since being awarded their One Day International status in 1974, the Men in Blue have played 126 bilateral ODI series (two or more games), of which 59 have been on home soil.

After defeats to England (1974), New Zealand (1976 and 1981) and Pakistan (1978), a Sunil Gavaskar-led India scripted history by winning their maiden bilateral ODI series against England in 1981/82.

From the 73 series wins, India won nine successive ODI series between June 2016 and December 2017. This run bettered their previous best of six series wins between November 2007 and November 2010.

India holds the record for most consecutive bilateral ODI series wins against an opponent (12).

The Pakistan cricket team are second on this list with 68 bilateral ODI series wins. The Shaheens recorded an ODI series victory in their first bilateral assignment against England in 1974.

The travelling Pakistani side, captained by Intikhab Alam, picked up seven and eight-wicket victories to seal a 2-0 whitewash result against the Three Lions.

The next best team with the most bilateral ODI series wins is the England cricket team. The English, credited as the pioneers of the sport, played the first-ever ODI and the first bilateral ODI series against Australia.

Brian Close skippered the Three Lions side that would script a 2-1 series win at Birmingham, and there onwards, England would go on to win 66 bilateral ODI series.

South Africa comes in fourth for most bilateral ODI series wins with 61 series victories. The Proteas, currently fifth on the ICC ODI Team rankings, played their bilateral series against India in 1991/92 and scripted a 3-0 success away from home.

It was a significant result for South Africa after they made an official return to action as they were suspended from the sport due to the apartheid policy.

Australia and New Zealand complete the top five list for most bilateral ODI series wins, as the fierce rivals have won 54 ODI series each.

India sets new world record for most consecutive bilateral ODI series wins against a team

The Indian cricket team holds the record for the most consecutive bilateral ODI series wins against a team.

India achieved the feat on July 24, 2022, after they defeated West Indies by two wickets in a high-scoring thriller in the second ODI at the Queen’s Park Oval to clinch the three-match series.

Chasing a steep target of 312, India rode on all-rounder Axar Patel’s match-winning knock of 64 off just 35 balls and fifties from middle-order batters Shreyas Iyer (63) and Sanju Samson (54) to chase down the total with just two wickets in hand and two balls to spare.

Earlier in the match, West Indies vice-captain Shai Hope smashed 115 off 135 balls while captain Nicholas Pooran scored 74 to help the hosts post 311/6 in their allotted 50 overs.

With another series victory under their belt, India recorded their 12th consecutive bilateral ODI series win over West Indies - the most for a team against any opposition.

Interestingly, the impressive streak started in 2007 when Rahul Dravid-led Men in Blue beat West Indies 3-1 in a four-match home series.

India surpassed arch-rivals Pakistan’s previous record, who won 11 consecutive ODI series against minnows Zimbabwe from 1996 to 2020.

Under captain Wasim Akram, Pakistan started their streak after whitewashing Zimbabwe 3-0 at home in 1996. The Babar Azam-led Pakistan thrashed Zimbabwe 3-0 in a three-match ODI series in 2020 to record their 11th consecutive bilateral series win in the 50-over format.

The Pakistan cricket team also features third on the list for most consecutive bilateral ODI series wins against a team. Between 1999 and 2022, they have registered 10 successive bilateral ODI series wins against West Indies.

South Africa and India complete the top five list for most consecutive bilateral ODI series win against a team.

While the Proteas recorded nine successive bilateral ODI series wins over neighbours Zimbabwe from 1995 to 2018, India has registered the same number of bilateral ODI series victories against Sri Lanka between 2007 and 2021.

From Brian Lara to Donald Bradman, know the list for the highest individual scores in first-class cricket

Former West Indies cricketer Brian Lara holds the record for the highest individual score in first-class cricket.

While playing for Warwickshire, Lara smashed an unbeaten 501 against Durham in a County Championship match at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham in 1994.

Interestingly, it remains the only quintuple-hundred to be registered in First-Class cricket history.

Lara’s record-breaking innings was laced with 62 fours and 10 sixes. The southpaw faced 427 balls to score the quintuple-hundred while staying at the crease for seven hours and 54 minutes. Lara powered Warwickshire to 810/4 before captain Dermot Reeve declared the innings.

Earlier, Durham had posted 556/8d courtesy John Morris’ 204 as the match ended in a draw.

Lara broke Pakistan cricketer Hanif Mohammad’s record, who scored 499 for Karachi against Bahawalpur in the semi-final of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy in 1959.

After Bahawalpur were bowled out for 185 in their first innings, Hanif Mohammad played an incredible innings of 499 to help Karachi post 772/7d in their first innings. Mohammad’s scintillating innings included 64 fours.

Bahawalpur were once again bundled out for 108 as Karachi secured a massive win by an innings and 479 runs.

Australia cricket legend Donald Bradman features third on the list for the highest individual score in First-Class cricket.

Bradman scored an unbeaten 452 while playing for New South Wales against Queensland in a Sheffield Shield match in 1930.

After New South Wales were bowled out for 235 in their first innings, Queensland could only manage 227 in their first innings.

In the second innings, New South Wales rode on Bradman’s unbeaten 452 to post a massive score of 761/8d. Queensland were skittled out for 84 in their second innings as New South Wales claimed a 685-run victory.

India’s Bhausaheb Nimbalkar and Bill Ponsford of Australia complete the top five list for the highest individual scores in first-class cricket.

While Bhausaheb Nimbalkar smashed an unbeaten 443 for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in a Ranji Trophy encounter in 1948, Bill Ponsford scored 437 for Victoria against Queensland in a Sheffield Shield match in 1927.

After Kathiawar were bowled out for 238 in their first innings, Bhausaheb Nimbalkar’s 443 and opener Kamal Bhandarkar’s 205 powered Maharashtra to 826/4 in their first innings. Maharashtra won by default after Kathiawar forfeited the match.

Meanwhile, Victoria rode on Bill Ponsford’s incredible innings of 437 and Stork Hendry’s 129 to help Victoria post 793 in their first innings.

Queensland were bowled out for 189 and 407 in the two innings, respectively, as Victoria won the match by an innings and 197 runs.

Bill Ponsford had earlier scored 429 for Victoria in an Australian domestic miscellaneous first-class match against Tasmania in 1923.

The numbers guide for West Indies vs India rivalry in ODI cricket

The Indian cricket team will begin its white-ball tour of the West Indies with a three-match ODI series starting Friday, July 22.

India are coming off a 2-1 series win in England, including an emphatic 10-wicket win over the Three Lions in the first ODI at The Oval.

The West Indies cricket team, on the other hand, is on a six-game losing streak in ODIs as it was handed back-to-back whitewashes by Bangladesh and Pakistan in its recent assignments.

Once a titan in ODI cricket, the Windies have struggled for consistency in the 50-over game and will aim for a possible turnaround against a formidable opponent in India.

The upcoming three-game series will convene for the 23rd bilateral ODI series between the West Indies and India, and India’s first trip to the Caribbean Islands since 2019.

Here are some interesting stats, head-to-head and talking points ahead of the upcoming West Indies vs India ODI series.

Most runs in a calendar year in women’s ODIs: Belinda Clark, Laura Wolvaardt headline list

Australian cricketer Belinda Clark holds the record for the most runs in a calendar year in women’s ODIs.

The former Australia women’s cricket team captain etched her name in the history books after scoring 970 runs in just 16 ODI matches in the 1997 calendar year. She scored three hundreds and four half-centuries that year and boasted a staggering average of 80.83.

Almost a quarter of that (970) runs came against Denmark during the 1997 Women’s World Cup in Mumbai. Clark smashed an unbeaten 229 off just 155 balls against Denmark in the group stage to record what was the highest individual score in Women’s ODI cricket at that time. The record was later broken by New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr after she scored 232 not out against Ireland in Dublin back in 2018.

Clark was a prolific run-scorer in Women’s ODI cricket as she also accumulated 842 runs in a calendar year in 2000 - the fifth-best tally on the all-time list. In that year, Clark scored 842 runs in 16 ODIs at an impressive average of 76.54. She had one century and six fifties to her name.

South Africa star cricketer Laura Wolvaardt is second on the all-time list for most runs in a calendar year in women’s ODIs. The swashbuckling opening batter has currently scored 882 runs in a calendar year in 2022. Wolvaardt has been in the best form of her life, amassing 882 runs in 18 matches at an average of 49. She has hit one hundred and eight fifties in 2022 so far. Wolvaardt needs another 89 runs to surpass the record of Belinda Clark.

Legendary New Zealand cricketer Debbie Hockley is third on the list. The former Kiwi batter scored 880 runs in 1997. Hockley accumulated the tally in 16 ODIs at an average of 62.85. She registered two tons and six fifties.

Former New Zealand cricketer Amy Satterthwaite features fourth on the list. The former vice-captain of New Zealand women’s cricket team scored 853 runs in a calendar year in 2016. Satterthwaite amassed those runs in just 15 matches at an average of 85.30. She smashed three hundreds and four half-centuries in Women’s ODI cricket in 2016.

Mithali Raj and Deepti Sharma are the two Indian cricketers who have amassed more than 700 runs in a calendar year. Both, curiously, achieved the feat in 2017. While Deepti amassed 787 runs in 20 ODIs at an average of 49.18, former India captain Mithali Raj scored 783 runs in 19 matches at an average of 71.18.

Retired England cricketer Claire Taylor (807 runs) in 2005, star Australia duo of Meg Lanning (761 runs) and Ellse Perry (732 runs), both in 2016, complete the top 10.

In-form Rassie van der Dussen headlines list for best batting average in ODI cricket

South Africa’s Rassie van der Dussen owns the record for the best batting average in ODI cricket.

The talismanic batter has maintained a batting of 74.95 in ODIs while aggregating 1,499 runs in 30 innings. In the process, van der Dussen has hit three centuries and 11 fifties.

In fact, Rassie van der Dussen is the only ODI batter to register a batting average over 70. Following a career-best score of 134 in 117 balls against England in July 2022, the Proteas star took his average within touching distance of 75.

Rassie van der Dussen’s batting average of 74.95 in 36 ODI matches is significantly greater than Ryan ten Doeschate, who is second on the list at 67.00.

The now-retired Dutchman Ryan ten Doeschate is arguably one of the greatest players to have played cricket from an Associate nation, as he amassed 1,541 runs in 33 ODI matches.

The South Africa-born all-rounder batted in all but one of his 50-over matches for the Netherlands, with the 2007 ODI match against Scotland washed out and his team not getting a chance to bat.

Ryan ten Doeschate’s best performance with the bat came against England during the 2011 Cricket World Cup. He slammed a 110-ball 119 as the Netherlands were chasing a target of 297. His knock, however, ended in a losing cause as the Three Lions won the fixture by six wickets.

Ten Doeschate retired in 2021 as the Netherlands’ leading run-getter in ODIs, with five centuries and nine fifties. He is the only non-active player on the top five list for best batting average in ODI cricket.

Babar Azam, the current top-ranked batter on the ICC Men’s ODI rankings, is the third batter with the best batting average in ODI cricket.

The Pakistan captain has amassed 4,442 runs in 89 matches while registering a batting average of 59.22 and a strike rate of 90.24.

Azam is one of the finest batters Pakistan has ever had, and he continues to climb up the run charts. His highest individual ODI knock was 158 off 139 deliveries against England in 2021.

Former India captain Virat Kohli is next on the list. He is currently the highest-active ODI run-scorer with 12,344 runs in 262 games, and has registered a batting average of 57.68.

Kohli is among the greatest modern-day stalwarts across all forms of cricket. But in ODI cricket alone, the top-order batter is seen as someone who could break Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI hundreds, given he has scored 43 centuries in 50-overs cricket.

Ben Stokes ODI records: A lookback at the star all-rounder’s stellar moments with England

England cricket team all-rounder Ben Stokes announced his retirement from One Day International cricket on Monday, July 18, and played his final ODI against South Africa on Tuesday, July 19.

Stokes could manage just five runs in his swansong ODI fixture at his home ground of Durham as England fell short by 62 runs while chasing 334 against South Africa. On the bowling front, the all-rounder registered a haul of 0/44.

The 31-year-old, who was born in Christchurch in New Zealand but raised in the town of Cockermouth in England, made his ODI debut against Ireland in August 2011 and has since been one of their top performers in the 50-overs format.

During his 11-year career in ODI cricket, Ben Stokes featured in 105 games and played a crucial role in England winning their first 50-over ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019 at home.

One of the top performing all-rounders across all formats, Ben Stokes has always delivered for England in crunch situations in 50-overs cricket. With this in mind, we take a look at some Ben Stokes’ ODI records and achievements.

Total runs and wickets in ODI cricket

Ben Stokes has aggregated 2,924 runs and 74 wickets in 105 ODIs.

With the bat, the left-hander has three centuries and 21 fifties at an average of 38.98 and a strike rate of 95.08 since his ODI debut in 2011.

As far as his bowling is concerned, Stokes has an economy rate of 6.05 with one five-wicket and one four-wicket haul in 50-over cricket.

Highest individual score in ODI cricket

Ben Stokes’ top performance with the bat in ODI cricket came against Australia in a 2017 ICC Champions Trophy match at Birmingham. The all-rounder hit an unbeaten 102 off 109 balls.

Stokes smashed as many as 13 boundaries as he guided England - who were 35 for three at one point - to a score of 240/4, which helped the Three Lions win the fixture by 40 runs on DLS.

Among his top 10 high scores in ODI cricket, Ben Stokes’ unbeaten 84 in the 2019 Cricket World Cup final against New Zealand at Lord’s will be his most fondly remembered 50-over innings.

Set a target of 242 to chase, hosts England were reduced to 71/3 in 19.3 overs before Stokes arrived to bat. Coming in to bat at number five, the all-rounder would remain unbeaten as he slammed five boundaries and two sixes in his 98-ball composed knock to help England tie New Zealand’s score at 241 and take the CWC final to a Super Over.

With 15 runs still needed in the Super Over, Ben Stokes slammed eight of the total runs required and helped England win the final. He was adjudged the Player of the Match for his heroics.

Best bowling figures in ODI cricket

Ben Stokes registered his best bowling figures of 5/61 against Australia in 2013.

While Australia opted to bat first, Stokes grabbed the back-to-back wickets of Aaron Finch (26) and Matthew Wade (0) in the Southampton ODI to reduce the visitors to 48/3 in 9.5 overs.

His other victims were Shane Watson (143), Adam Voges (8) and Mitchell Johnson (2).

Stokes’ impressive spell with the ball, however, was in a losing cause as England (249) fell short of Australia’s 298 by 49 runs.

Most runs in an ODI innings by a wicket-keeper: MS Dhoni’s fireworks propels him to top of list

A lot of players can create magic with their bats - beautiful drives, big shots - you name it, they have it. And then there is another set of players who weave magic with their hands, both in front of the stumps with their bats and behind it with gloves.

Unlike other players, the role of a keeper is more challenging as they have to focus on more than one discipline throughout the game. Not only are they expected to be flawless behind the stumps, but wicket-keepers are also expected to perform with their bat.

It’s no mean feat as they have to stay focused more than most throughout the opposition innings before showing their own capability with willow in hand. Here’s a look at the players who scored the most runs in an ODI innings by a wicket-keeper.

MS Dhoni 183* vs Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka had scored 298/4 in their innings and got off to a great start while defending the total, taking out Sachin Tendulkar in the first over of the innings. MS Dhoni, coming in at No. 3, scored 183* (145) with 15 fours and 10 sixes, taking India to 303/4 and winning the match.

To put his knock into perspective, Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara had scored an unbeaten 138 off 147 balls himself, with another veteran, Mahela Jayawardene, scoring 71 off 70 deliveries. Yet it was Dhoni who shone that night at Jaipur in October 2005.

Quinton de Kock 178 vs Australia

South African wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock made headlines against Australia in September 2016. Asked to bat first, Australia stacked up 294/9 on the scoreboard, powered by David Warner’s 40 off 36 balls, George Bailey’s 74 off 90 balls and John Hastings’ 51 off 56 deliveries.

In the chase, South Africa got off to a blazing start, with both their openers hitting big from the word go. Openers de Kock and Rilee Rossouw stitched together a 145-run stand for the first wicket in just 17 overs, which made the rest of the chase a piece of cake.

De Kock’s knock, which came with 16 fours and 11 maximums, helped South Africa outdo Australia’s score by the 37th over itself.

Liton Das 176 vs Zimbabwe

Litton Das’ special knock against Zimbabwe in March 2020 is one that Bangladesh fans will remember fondly. Playing at Sylhet, the home team’s openers - Litton and Tamim Iqbal - put a 292-run stand together.

The duo of Liton Das (176 off 143 balls) and Tamim Iqbal (128* off 109 deliveries) pummelled 23 fours and 14 sixes between them, with the former alone responsible for 16 fours and eight sixes.

The opening pair helped take Bangladesh to 322/3 in a match reduced to 43 overs due to rain. In response, Zimbabwe could only score 218 in 37.3 overs, falling short of the revised target calculated by the Duckworth Lewis method by 123 runs.

From Viv Richards to Yuvraj Singh, know the cricketers to register a fifty and five wickets in an ODI

To score a fifty and claim a five-wicket haul in an ODI is considered to be an exceptional achievement for any cricketer. Till date, only 22 cricketers have registered a fifty and five wickets in an ODI

West Indies cricket legend Viv Richards was the first cricketer to achieve the rare feat. During the first ODI of the West Indies tour of New Zealand in 1987, Richards smashed 119 off just 113 balls to help the visitors post 237/9 in their allotted 50 overs. The West Indies captain followed it up by picking five wickets for just 41 runs in his quota of 10 overs to bundle out New Zealand for 142 in Dunedin. West Indies won the match by 95 runs.

Kris Srikkanth was the first Indian cricketer and second overall to register a fifty and five wickets in an ODI.

Electing to field, India rode on Srikkanth’s 5/27 to restrict New Zealand to 196/9 in their 50 overs. In reply, the swashbuckling Indian opening batter scored 70 off 87 balls to guide India to a four-wicket win in Visakhapatnam.

Former Australia all-rounder Mark Waugh was the third player to achieve the accomplishment of scoring a fifty and bagging a five-wicket haul in an ODI.

After Australia captain Mark Taylor won the toss and opted to bat, Waugh played an impressive knock of 57 off 70 balls to help the hosts post 198/8 in their 50 overs in Melbourne. Defending a below-par total, Waugh claimed five wickets for just 24 runs to bowl out West Indies for 194.

Apart from Kris Srikkanth, former captain Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh are the other two Indians to accomplish the unique record.

During the fourth ODI of Zimbabwe’s tour of India in 2000, Ganguly bagged five wickets for 34 runs in his 10 overs to bowl out the visitors for 165 in Kanpur. In reply, the India captain scored an unbeaten 71 to power India to a nine-wicket victory.

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh scored a fifty and picked five wickets against Ireland during an ICC Cricket World Cup match at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore in 2011.

After the left-arm spinner recorded figures of 10-0-31-5 to bowl Ireland out for 207, the southpaw followed it up with an unbeaten half-century (50) to help the hosts claim a five-wicket win.

Former Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi has achieved the feat three times - the most by any player in international cricket. Afridi recorded the incredible milestone against England, Sri Lanka and West Indies in his ODI career.

Namibia’s JJ Smit is the latest entrant to the elile list of players that have scored a fifty and got a five-wicket haul in the same ODI. The Namibia captain scored 56 and later claimed 5/26 to help his team beat Oman by 40 runs during an ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 encounter in Windhoek in 2021.
