Australia’s Twenty20 batting horrors: The sub-par totals from the team from Down Under

Australia recorded their lowest score in T20 cricket after they were bundled out for a paltry 62 against Bangladesh in the fifth match of the series in Dhaka on Monday.

The Aussies were chasing a target of 123 on a slowish surface but the Bangladeshi spinners proved to be a handful for the visitors.

After two quick wickets in the powerplay, all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan picked up four wickets in the middle overs and ended Australia’s hopes of finishing the series on a high.

It was the fifth time that the Australians were dismissed for under 100 in T20Is. The score of 62 is the fourth-lowest among full member countries.

Here are the other four instances when the Aussies scored low in T20 cricket:

79 vs England at Southampton, June 13, 2005

In a T20I match at Southampton in 2005, Australia were bowled out for 79 runs inside 15 overs while chasing England’s total of 180. Jason Gillespie, batting at No. 9, was the top scorer for the Aussies with 24 as only three batsmen managed to cross the double-digit mark.

86 vs India at Dhaka, March 30, 2014

The 2014 T20 World Cup saw Australia go down to India in one of their worst performances in the showpiece event. Coming into the match on the back of two successive losses, Australia failed to chase India’s target of 160 and were bowled out for a mere 86 runs.

89 vs Pakistan at Dubai, September 5, 2012

Australia’s bilateral series against Pakistan in Dubai in 2012 saw the Aussies crumble to 89 all-out in the first T20I match of the series. In reply, Pakistan chased the total in 14.5 overs to win the match by seven wickets.

89 vs Pakistan at Abu Dhabi, October 24, 2018

After their 2012 debacle, Australia again succumbed to a low score against Pakistan six years later. Batting first, Pakistan rode on Babar Azam’s 68 to score 155/8.

Chasing the target, Australia were dented right from the first ball as Imad Wasim and Faheem Ashraf wreaked havoc. The duo picked five wickets between them and handed a crushing 66-run defeat to the Aussies.
