The Indian women’s hockey team will take on Great Britain in the bronze medal match at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Friday, August 6.

The Indian eves, led by their captain Rani Rampal, came close to booking a place in the final on Wednesday. However, they were eventually beaten by goals from Noel Maria Barrionuevo as Argentina women emerged 2-1 victors in the semi-final.

The Indian women’s hockey team will now eye a third-place finish on the podium and look to emulate what the Indian men’s hockey team achieved at Tokyo 2020 on Thursday.

Great Britain, on the other hand, suffered a bitter defeat in their semi-final clash against Netherlands. The team lost 5-1 and put on an extremely disappointing show. Their record against India, however, is something that might cheer them up.

The two teams have already crossed paths once in Tokyo 2020. They met in their Pool A encounter on July 28 where goals from Grace Balsdon, Lily Owsley and Hannah Martin gave Great Britain a 4-1 win over India.

Great Britain have, in fact, won two of their last four encounters against India while scoring nine and conceding four goals. The other two matches between the teams ended in draws.

However, a lot has changed since India’s previous loss to Great Britain. Following their 1-4 defeat, India went on a three-match winning run, beating the likes of Ireland and South Africa in Pool matches before getting the better of Australia in the quarter-final.

The Indian eves may very well be the underdogs again in the bronze medal match, but they have shown they can deliver under pressure on multiple occasions at Tokyo 2020.
