The Table Tennis events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics are scheduled to start from July 24, Saturday, kicking off with the preliminary round of the men's & women's singles event.

A total of 172 paddlers will compete at Tokyo 2020 across five events  - men’s singles, men’s team, women’s singles, women’s team and the mixed doubles.

All the Table Tennis events at the Tokyo Olympics will take place in the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

The Indian table tennis contingent has four players competing in three events. Veteran paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal will lead the charge, with Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, Manika Batra and Sutirtha Mukherjee also in the squad.

Sutirtha Mukherjee and G Sathiyan will compete only in the women's singles and men's singles events, respectively. As for Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra, they will team up in the mixed doubles event in addition to their respective singles events.

Both Kamal and Batra represented India in the men's and women's singles events at Rio 2016, but neither advanced beyond the first round. They have since made tremendous strides, however.

Indian paddlers turned heads during the 2018 Commonwealth Games, where they clinched three gold, two silver and three bronze medals. It was followed by two bronze medals in the 2018 Asian Games as well.

There is optimism among Indian fans about the performance of their paddlers at the Summer Games.
