Ivan Perisic to miss Croatia vs Spain at Euro 2020 - get team news, telecast and streaming details

Spain face a stern test in their UEFA Euro 2020 round of 16 tie, as they take on Croatia at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen on Monday, June 28.

It took La Roja until the very last group stage game to make their presence felt as the three-time Euro champions burst to life with a 5-0 win over Slovakia. Croatia, on the other hand, left it late too. After losing their opening game to England, they went on to play out a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic before beating Scotland 3-1 in their final group stage match to finish second in Group D.

While both teams’ players haven’t always been at their best in the tournament so far, they will be aware that there’s absolutely no margin for error from here on. But history favours Spain ahead of the game as Croatia have been eliminated in all three of their previous knockout matches at the Euros.

Croatia vs Spain head-to-head

Croatia got the better of Spain in the group stage of Euro 2016, with Nikola Kalinic and Ivan Perisic scoring for them. Two years later, when the teams crossed swords in the Nations League, La Roja hammered the Checkered Ones 6-0. Their last meeting, however, ended in a win for Croatia with Andrej Kramaric and Tin Jedvaj scoring in a 3-2 victory.

Overall, the teams have played eight games between them, including international friendlies, and Spain have the edge having won four of those meetings. Croatia have won three while one ended in a draw.

Croatia team news and injury

The biggest absentee for Croatia is going to be their star winger Ivan Perisic, who recently tested positive for COVID-19.

"During the evening, the Croatian Football Association received the results of regular testing for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which showed that national team member Ivan Perisic was positive for coronavirus," the Croatian Football Association said in an official statement.

Furthermore, they are also set to miss experienced defender Dejan Lovren in the fixture as he remains suspended. Croatia have other issues too as there are three players who are on the brink of suspension. The likes of Marcelo Brozovic, Duje Caleta-Car and Mateo Kovacic will miss the next match if booked.

Spain team news and injury

Spain do not have any injury issues whatsoever. Head coach Luis Enrique will take positives from their win over Slovakia, meaning that Cesar Azpilicueta might keep Marcos Llorente out of the starting line-up again.

Like Croatia, Spain, too, have players who run the risk of suspension. If booked against Croatia, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Pau Torres and Rodri will miss the quarter-final clash should the Spaniards progress.

England kickstart Euro 2020 campaign against Croatia - get team news, telecast and streaming details

The first match of Group D in UEFA Euro 2020 will see England playing host to Croatia on Sunday, June 13 at the iconic Wembley Stadium in London.

Three years on since their semi-final exit from the 2018 FIFA World Cup at hands of Croatia, England will be eager to inflict some long-awaited retaliation. A lot has changed since Croatia are far from their previous self. Four players from their starting XI from the World Cup have retired while senior defender Dejan Lovren has admitted that the young players are “lacking respect for their elders”

England, on the other hand, are more or less a new-look team as Jack Grealish, Mason Mount and Phil Foden have become an integral part of the squad.

Croatia’s form leading into the tournament is a thing of worry. The 2018 World Cup finalists have, in fact, endured the worst results of all 24 Euro nations in their last 10 games. They have won a mere three, drawn two and lost five matches. During that time, they scored 14 and have conceded just as many goals. The Three Lions, on the other hand, have won seven of their last 10 games and lost twice.

England team news

England manager Gareth Southgate is going to be without key centre-back Harry Maguire. The Manchester United defender is not expected to be fit for Sunday’s game. Apart from that, the team is still sweating over the fitness of midfielder Jordan Henderson.

That said, it will be interesting to see how Southgate will approach the game given the plethora of talent he has at his disposal in midfield.

Croatia team news

Zlatko Dalic’s team has an experienced midfield, unlike England. Mateo Kovacic, Marcelo Brozovic and Luka Modric will offer Croatia plenty of quality from the center of the park as they strive for consistency in Dalic’s usual 4-3-3 formation. It is their defence, however, which needs to tighten things up. In terms of injuries, defender Dejan Lovren is the only worry.

Dark horses no more: Croatia cap resurgence with Euro 2020 spot

World Cup runners-up Croatia rounded off a rebuilding mission by booking their place at Euro 2020 with a 3-1 win over Slovakia, but they are unlikely to sneak under the radar again at next year's finals.

Croatia secured top spot in Group E, a section also including Hungary, Wales and Azerbaijan, with five wins and two draws from their eight qualifiers.

Coach Zlatko Dalic, who masterminded the run to last year's World Cup final, has gradually reconstructed a squad that lost Mario Mandzukic, Danijel Subasic and Vedran Corluka to retirement in the wake of the 4-2 loss to France in Russia.

The "Vatreni" -- Croatian for "Fiery Ones" -- needed only a point in Rijeka on Saturday to ensure a spot at the 24-team event, which kicks off in Rome on June 12.

After a shocking start for home fans when Robert Bozenik scored in the 32th minute, Croatia's qualification was never in doubt once Nikola Vlasic drilled home the leveller in the second half.

Bruno Petkovic headed the hosts in front and Ivan Perisic sealed the three points with a thumping finish with 16 minutes left.

"I'm relieved ... proud and happy," Dalic said after the match.

"These boys deserved the European Championship. This is the crowning moment for all that we have done in this year and a half since the World Cup."

'Dark horses' no more

But the path through qualifying, preceded by a poor showing in the Nations League, where Croatia finished last in their group behind Spain and England, was far from plain sailing.

Thumped 6-0 by Spain in their first competitive outing since the World Cup, Dalic spoke of the need for "fresh blood" to rejuvenate his side.

Incorporating the likes of Petkovic, Josip Brekalo and Vlasic, Croatia began their qualifying bid with a difficult 2-1 victory against Azerbaijan at home in March.

They slumped to a defeat by the same scoreline away to Hungary days later, but victory over Wales in June and a 4-0 win away to Slovakia rebuilt fragile confidence.

A disappointing 1-1 draw in Azerbaijan was a setback but Croatia recovered to dismiss Hungary 3-0, before a point in Cardiff left them on the brink of qualification.

For the former Yugoslav republic, independent since 1991, it is the sixth time it will play at the European Championship.

"We are getting young players who today played like veterans. Vlasic and (Dino) Peric played superbly," Dalic said Saturday.

Croatian papers Sunday echoed his view, praising the squad and Dalic who became just the second coach to take the country to two successive major tournaments.

The legendary Miroslav Ciro Blazevic was the first, leading Croatia to the Euro '96 quarter-finals and a third-place finish at the 1998 World Cup in France.

The nation of 4.2 million people reached the World Cup final last year for the first time, inspired by captain Luka Modric, but eventually fell to a heavily fancied France.

"In a bit more than a year Croatia formed an excellent 'make up' and that is why we are looking forward to the European tournament," the Sportske Novosti daily commented Sunday.

"Croatia will not be a 'dark horse' in summer 2020 but will be rather attacking from the front rows, which is both an advantage and a burden."

Euro 2020 takes shape as Netherlands, Germany and Croatia qualify

The Netherlands, Germany and World Cup finalists Croatia expanded a list of big hitters to qualify for Euro 2020 on Saturday as the trio booked their places at next summer's finals.

Austria also made it through to the multi-host tournament, which kicks off in Rome on June 12, with 16 sides now ensured of a spot at the 24-team event and only four places remaining from the main qualifying route.

They join other big names such like world champions France, Spain, Italy and England, with European champions Portugal one win away from qualification.

Ronald Koeman's resurgent Dutch needed a point to qualify for their first major tournament since coming third at the 2014 World Cup and got what they needed in a scrappy goalless draw with Northern Ireland in Belfast.

"It means a lot for us as players. Hopefully it means so much to the Dutch people," Liverpool defender Van Dijk said.

However they were far from the flamboyant outfit that has so often thrilled in Group C, and survived a huge scare when Steven Davis smashed a first-half penalty high over the bar.

The Dutch dominated possession and stopped the hosts from having a single shot on target but failed to create much themselves.

Davis' spot-kick blunder left Michael O'Neill's side third and hoping for a way into the tournament via the playoffs.

Germany join the Dutch

The draw allowed fierce rivals Germany to move top in the group as Toni Kroos hit a brace in a simple 4-0 win over Belarus in Moenchengladbach which saw them qualify for the Euros for the 13th time in a row.

A deft back-heeled goal from defender Matthias Ginter just before the break and impressive finishing by Leon Goretzka and Kroos gave the Germans a comfortable three-goal lead early in the second half.

Captain Manuel Neuer produced a superb save to keep out Belarus striker Igor Stasevich's penalty before Kroos dribbled through the defence to claim his second goal seven minutes from time and make sure of a routine win.

"Overall we did well, but at the moment I don't include us among the favourites for the European title," said Kroos, echoing coach Joachim Loew's comments from earlier in the week.

A win over Northern Ireland in Frankfurt on Tuesday will guarantee Loew's new-look side first place.

Croatia survived a scare to secure their place in the Euros after coming from behind beat Slovakia 3-1 in Rijeka.

The World Cup runners up needed just a point to ensure qualification from Group E but Robert Bozenik stunned the home crowd when he tapped the away side ahead in the 32nd minute.

However it was one-way traffic in the second half and Croatia's qualification was never in doubt once Nikola Vlasic drilled home the leveller.

Bruno Petkovic headed the hosts in front and Ivan Perisic sealed the three points with a thumping finish with 16 minutes left.

"We were trying to stay calm in the dressing room at half-time, we were sure that our quality would prevail. We kept attacking, creating chances, and the goals came," said Petkovic.

Wales with fighting chance

That win gives Wales a fighting chance of qualifying after their 2-0 victory over Azerbaijan earlier on Saturday.

Ryan Giggs' side stay third thanks to first-half headed goals from Kieffer Moore and Harry Wilson and Slovakia losing against the Croats.

They are just one point behind second-placed Hungary, who travel to Cardiff on the final day for a winner-takes-all clash.

"It's massive for us to get the three points and now we go again Tuesday," said Moore. "We came here for the three points and we got them -- now it's all guns blazing towards Tuesday."

Austria booked their place with a 2-1 win over North Macedonia that kept third-placed Slovenia at bay despite their 1-0 triumph over Latvia.

They are second in Group G behind Poland, who had already qualified going into this round of games but maintained a three-point lead at the top of the group thanks to a 2-1 win at Israel.

In Saint Petersburg, the Hazard brothers made short work of Russia as already-qualified Belgium maintained their 100 percent record with a 4-1 win that secured them top spot in Group I.

Eden and Thorgan Hazard put Roberto Martinez's side three goals ahead at the break before in-form Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku crashed home the fourth in the 72nd minute to make absolutely sure of the result.

Nine-star Belgium book Euro place, Dutch beat Northern Ireland

Belgium became the first team to qualify for the 2020 European Championship finals as Romelu Lukaku scored twice in a 9-0 thrashing of San Marino in Brussels on Thursday, while the Netherlands needed a late comeback to beat Northern Ireland.

Lukaku took his record Belgium international tally past 50 goals as Roberto Martinez's Group I leaders opened up an unassailable 11-point lead over third-placed Cyprus with three games remaining.

The world-number-one ranked side booked their spot at next year's tournament, which will be played at 12 venues across Europe, after seven straight qualifying wins.

Russia appear set to take the second automatic slot from the group, after a 4-0 win over Scotland moved them eight points ahead of Cyprus.

Belgium will be one of the favorites as they look to lift a first major international title when the Euros get underway on June 12.

"In my eyes, nine countries have the talent to win the Euro," said coach Martinez. "What will make the difference is how you face adversity. It's necessary to sacrifice yourself for your teammates."

Their victory at the King Badouin Stadium matched their record winning margin of nine goals, having previously beaten Zambia and Gibraltar 9-0 in 1994 and 2017 respectively and hammered San Marino 10-1 in 2001.

"Nine-nil is a good result but we would have loved to have scored one more and broken that all-time record," said Inter Milan striker Lukaku.

The first breakthrough arrived when Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans fed Lukaku, who fired home his landmark goal in the 28th minute.

The floodgates then opened, as Nacer Chadli slotted into the corner from the edge of the area three minutes later and visiting defender Cristian Brolli scored a comical own goal 10 minutes before the interval.

Lukaku wasted little time in making it 51 Belgium goals, before Toby Alderweireld and Tielemans made it six before half-time.

Substitute Christian Benteke drilled in number seven with 11 minutes remaining, 18-year-old Yari Verschaeren scored his first international goal from the penalty spot, and Atalanta defender Timothy Castagne completed the rout in the 90th minute.

Dutch break Northern Irish hearts

Memphis Depay's late brace rescued the Netherlands a 3-1 win over Northern Ireland which sent Ronald Koeman's men top of Group C.

The Oranje, bidding to reach a first major finals since finishing third at the 2014 World Cup, are level on points with both Germany and Northern Ireland, who have played a game more, but lead on head-to-head record.

Michael O'Neill's visitors were dreaming of a first-ever away win over the Dutch when substitute Josh Magennis headed them in front with a quarter-hour to play.

But Depay levelled in the 80th minute, and Luuk de Jong bundled the ball home at the back post in the first minute of injury time to deny Northern Ireland a crucial point before Depay grabbed his second.

"We are devastated with the nature of the defeat," O'Neill told Sky Sports. "We have to win our two remaining games, they are very difficult, Netherlands home and Germany away."

Russia sent Scotland tumbling to a fourth straight qualifying defeat which leaves the Nations League playoffs next March as the Scots' only possible route to Euro 2020.

Artem Dzyuba's excellent double and goals from Magomed Ozdoev and Aleksandr Golovin mean Russia will qualify with a draw in Cyprus on Sunday.

Croatia close on qualification

Croatia took control of Group E by beating Hungary 3-0 in Split, while Slovakia jumped into second despite being held to a 1-1 home draw by Wales.

Luka Modric's fifth-minute strike and two goals for Bruno Petkovic sent last year's World Cup runners-up Croatia four points clear of third-placed Hungary

Slovakia fell behind in the first half when former lifeguard Kieffer Moore scored on his international competitive debut for Wales but secured a draw thanks to Juraj Kucka's brilliant 53rd-minute volley.

Elsewhere, Robert Lewandowski netted a hat-trick, taking his tally this season to 18 goals for club and country, as Poland won 3-0 at Latvia to strengthen their position at the top of Group G.

They sit three points clear of closest challengers Austria, who saw off Israel 3-1.
