Premier League giants Manchester United will clash with La Liga side Villarreal in the final of the Europa League 2020-21 on May 27, Thursday, at the Stadion Energa Gdańsk in Poland.

While the Red Devils have cemented their spot for next year’s UEFA Champions League by finishing second in the Premier League, Villarreal finished seventh in La Liga and can only qualify for the elite European competition next season by winning the Europa League.

After getting demoted from the UCL group stages to start their Europa League campaign from the round of 32, Manchester United had to overcome Real Sociedad, AC Milan, Granada CF and AS Roma to reach the final.

Villarreal, on the other hand, qualified for the knockout stages after topping Group I table of UEL. They have since overcome the challenges of RB Salzburg, Dynamo Kyiv, Dinamo Zagreb and Arsenal to reach the summit clash.

Interestingly, the Villarreal vs Manchester United head-to-head is dominated by neither of them. The two sides have previously clashed four times, all in the UEFA Champions League group stages, with all those matches ending as goalless draws. Watch Villarreal vs Manchester United live!

Though Manchester United, who are yet to win silverware this season, remain the overwhelming favourites to win the title, Villarreal have an outside chance courtesy of their manager Unai Emery, who has won the Europa League three times.

Villarreal injury update and team news

Unai Emery will be sweating over the fitness of his star winger Samuel Chukwueze and central defender Juan Foyth, who are recovering from hamstring issues. Apart from them, experienced central midfielder Vicente Iborra remains sidelined with a ruptured cruciate ligament.

Manchester United injury update and team news

Manchester United’s biggest worry will be the injury of their captain Harry Maguire. The centre-back is recovering from an ankle injury and Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted to not having high hopes for his return. It was confirmed that despite travelling with the squad, he did not participate in a full training session.

Apart from Maguire, United will also miss the services of forward Anthony Martial and defender Phil Jones, who are ruled out with injuries.
