Sevilla is all set to lock horns with AS Roma at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary on Thursday, June 1 for the Europa League final 2022-23. The match is slated to begin at 12:30 AM (IST).
Both teams will fancy their chances of getting their hands on the trophy and there will be plenty of subplots at play.
AS Roma, who won the UEFA Conference League last season under Jose Mourinho, will back themselves to get their hands on another European trophy.
Mourinho has coached teams in final European finals and has won all of them, while Sevilla has never lost a Europa League final and is the most successful team in the history of the competition with six triumphs.
However, something has to give in Thursday’s final even though both teams have European pedigree behind them.
Both teams have endured underwhelming domestic campaigns. Sevilla is currently 11th in La Liga, while Roma is sixth in Serie A.
Not like they needed any, but the added incentive of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League by winning Thursday’s final is certain to spur on the teams.
As far as head-to-head between the teams go, these two sides have met just once on the European stage. They met in the round of 16 stage in Europa League 2019-20 when matches were just one leg due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Sevilla won that match 2-0.
Both teams have plenty of attacking players to make a difference for their team on the night. While Roma boasts talents like Lorenzo Pellegrini, El Shaarawy, Tammy Abraham, and Paulo Dybala - who is carrying a slight knock - on the team, Sevilla has the likes of Youssef En-Nesyri, Erik Lamela, and the experienced Ivan Rakitic.
All things considered, Thursday’s final between these two teams promises to be a fascinating contest and judging by the resilient spirit of both sides it wouldn’t come as a surprise if the match went to extra time or even penalties for that matter.
