A true warrior on the football field, Subhasish Bose’s determination to succeed is unparalleled. The 23-year-old defender has risen through the ranks of domestic football and now a pivotal part of Mumbai City FC and Indian national team’s defence.

Bose is one of those few players who possess the versatility of switching roles, where at times he’ll be seen charging from the left flank and at times functioning as a sturdy centre-back.

A product of the Pune FC academy, Subhasish signed for Churchill Brothers on loan before signing permanently for Goa in 2016. His noteworthy ascent was critically assessed and analyzed before he was picked up by one of the oldest existing football clubs in the country, Mohun Bagan. Bose considered it to be a childhood dream come true, playing alongside Indian national team players like Anas Edathodika and Pritam Kotal.

An active member of the Indian Super League since the 2017-18 season, Subhasish Bose moved to Mumbai from Bengaluru FC last season. His successful exploits with Bengaluru included a runners-up medal and a Hero Super Cup. It was a career-defining campaign for the young defender before he decided to join Mumbai in 2018.

The year 2018 also presented opportunities at the International stage which included a call up for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-23 qualifiers and the privilege to lead the Indian football team In the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) championship in 2018.

The Indian contingent fought hard but eventually lost the final 2-1 to the Maldives but Subhasish’s captaincy and leadership were thoroughly praised. The story didn’t stop there as the Kolkata-born defender took his subliminal form into the 2018-19 season of the Indian Super League with Mumbai City, appearing in 16 matches out of 18, cementing himself in the defence and catering to the requirements of his head coach, Jorge Costa

He was precise in his passing and made crucial interceptions keeping the opposition at bay. Bose emerged as one of the biggest reasons that Mumbai conceded the second least amount of goals (20) in the league last season.

The Islanders managed to reach the semi-finals but Bose’s much-desired dream to lift the coveted trophy was halted by FC Goa. The 24-year-old defender is adamant to make the ongoing season count with Mumbai and has nothing on his mind except lifting the trophy which had eluded him during his tenure at Bengaluru and Mumbai in the last two seasons.

Bose has often credited Mumbai City coach Jorge Costa for his improvement and has been vocal about his policies that were instrumental in Mumbai’s stride to the semi-finals. It’s still early days in the sixth season of the Indian Super League but given Bose’s resolve, it sure looks like it will be a rewarding one for him and his club.
