The first match of the UEFA Champions League 2020-21 semi-final stage will see La Liga giants Real Madrid take on Premier League side Chelsea at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium in the first leg on April 28, Wednesday.

While Real Madrid have won the elite European competition 13 times in the past, Chelsea’s only title win came in 2008 when they defeated Bayern Munich in the final.

Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea saw off a determined FC Porto side 2-1 on aggregate to seal a place in the semis, while Zinedine Zidane’s men knocked out 2018-19 UEFA Champions League winners Liverpool 3-1 to reach this stage.

Interestingly, despite Real Madrid's brilliant record in Europe, they have never been able to beat Chelsea. The Real Madrid vs Chelsea head-to-head record is dominated by the Blues 3-0, with the London club beating Madrid in the 1971 Cup Winners' Cup final on aggregate and the 1998 Super Cup final.

In recent times though, Real Madrid have faced Chelsea twice in pre-season tournaments, with the Galacticos winning on both occasions.

Real Madrid team news and injury update

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos will not play as he recovers from his calf injury. However, the three-time UCL winner is expected to return ahead of the second leg.

Apart from Ramos, left-back Ferland Mendy will miss the fixture with a calf injury as well, while midfielder Federico Valverde remains in isolation after testing positive for COVID-19. Wing-back Lucas Vasquez is ruled out for the rest of the season after picking a knee injury during the El Clasico.

However, the big news for Real Madrid is the return of former Chelsea star Eden Hazard, who is likely to take play in the crunch clash on Wednesday.

Chelsea team news and injury update

Chelsea will travel to Spain without Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic, who is recovering from a hamstring injury. The rest of the squad is fit to play.
