Spain begin their UEFA Euro 2020 quest with a home game against Sweden at the Estadio de La Cartuja on Tuesday, June 15.

Former world champions Spain’s bid to win their fourth UEFA Euro title was hit by a sudden wave of COVID-19 outbreak within the camp as captain Sergio Busquets and defender Diego Llorente tested positive for coronavirus in quick succession. The team has since undergone isolation and were vaccinated, but coach Luis Enrique believes that this could have an effect on his players.

Spain and Sweden met twice during the Euro qualifiers and while their first meeting was a 3-0 victory for La Roja, the second ended in a 1-1 draw after Rodrigo scored a 92nd-minute equalizer for Spain.

Spain vs Sweden head-to-head

The head-to-head record is outrightly dominated by Spain, who have won six of their 14 meetings against Sweden. The Blue and Yellow, on the other hand, have won just thrice. Sweden’s last victory over Spain dates back to Euro 2006 where goals from Johann Elmander and Marcus Allback guided their team to a 2-0 victory.

Spain team news

While there are no injuries in Spain’s camp, the team will be unable to count on the services of their captain Sergio Busquets, but defender Diego Llorente could make it to the team. Busquets’ unavailability means Enrique will be forced to make changes into the midfield. This means Manchester City midfielder Rodri could get an opportunity.

Sweden team news

Like Spain, Sweden, too, have been affected by the coronavirus outbreak as two of their players, namely, Dejan Kulusevski and Mattias Svanberg will miss the game due to the disease. Unlike Spain, the Swedish football team boasts experienced players Sebastian Larsson, Emil Forsberg, Victor Lindelof and Albin Ekdal. This could potentially play a big role in the game.
