Nigeria will square off against hosts Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations 2023 final at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ebimpé, Abidjan.

Under head coach José Peseiro, the Nigeria national football team pipped South Africa on penalties in a highly-dramatic semi-final clash to reach their eight AFCON final.

Earlier, Nigeria were held to a 1-1 draw by Equatorial Guinea in their AFCON 2023 opener, which then forced Peseiro to change to a 3-4-3 formation.

The revamped system helped the Super Eagles register four consecutive victories in the ongoing tournament before overcoming South Africa in the last four.

With seven points from three matches, Nigeria earlier finished second in the Group A standings to qualify for the knockouts.

Peseiro’s men later defeated Cameroon 2-0 in the Round of 16 and followed it by securing a 1-0 win over Angola in the quarter-finals.

On the other hand, the Ivory Coast national football team stormed to their fifth AFCON final after they were on the brink of elimination.

The hosts began their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau before they went down to Nigeria (0-1) and Equatorial Guinea (0-4) in their next two group matches.

Having accumulated three points from as many games, Ivory Coast squeezed into the playoffs as one of the best third-placed teams.

Led by interim coach Emerse Fae, the Elephants edged Senegal on penalties in the Round of 16 and later overcame Mali 2-1 in the quarter-finals.

In the semi-finals, Sébastien Haller’s match-winning goal in the 65th minute guided Ivory Coast to the AFCON 2023 final.

Meanwhile, Nigeria have won the AFCON on three occasions in 1980, 1994 and 2013 while Ivory Coast have clinched the continental title twice in 1992 and 2015.

Nigeria and Ivory Coast have faced each other on 28 occasions in international football, winning nine matches each. As many as 10 games have ended in draws.

The last time these two sides met, Nigeria beat Ivory Coast 1-0 in their Group A clash of the ongoing AFCON at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpé in January.
