Former Indian Super League champions Mumbai City FC (MCFC) are set to begin their 2022 AFC Champions League campaign against Saudi Arabian side Al-Shabab on Friday, April 8.

The 2020-21 champions, who travelled to Abu Dhabi for a two-week training camp in March, are drawn in Group B against Al Jazira (UAE), Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya (Iraq) and Al-Shabab in the west region of the competition. The team set up their camp in Al Forsan before heading to Riyadh for their group stage matches

Mumbai City FC are only the second Indian team to ever represent the country in the AFC tournament after FC Goa did so last year.

Leading up to the tournament, MCFC played two friendly matches against Al Ain FC and Al Hilal United, beating the former 2-1 and the latter 2-0.

Victories in club friendlies have been inspiring, but MCFC need to factor in the substandard form they endured during ISL 2021-22. In a season where they were supposed to defend their title, the team could only muster a fifth-place finish.

On top of that, midfielder Rowllin Borges has been ruled out at least until the group stage games.
