Jordan will lock horns with defending champions and hosts Qatar in the AFC Asian Cup 2023 final at the Lusail Stadium in Lusail, Qatar on Saturday, February 10.

Under Moroccan head coach Hussein Ammouta, the Jordan national football team scripted history as they reached the final of the continental football championship for the first time in their history.

Ranked 87th in the FIFA men’s rankings, Jordan stunned favourites South Korea 2-0 in the semi-finals to seal their place in the AFC Asian Cup 2023 final.

Yazan Al-Naimat scored the opening goal of the match in the 53rd minute before Musa Al-Taamari doubled the lead in the 66th minute to power Jordan to the showpiece clash.

Earlier, Jordan pipped Iraq 3-2 in the Round of 16 and later defeated Tajikistan 1-0 in the quarter-finals.

Interestingly, Jordan squeezed into the knockouts as one of the four best third-placed teams from the six groups.

With one win, one draw and one loss, Jordan finished third in Group E featuring Bahrain, South Korea and Malaysia.

On the other hand, the Qatar national football team reached their second consecutive AFC Asian Cup final after they overcame Iran 3-2 in a thrilling semi-final clash.

Led by newly-appointed head coach Tintín Márquez, Qatar have won all their six matches in the ongoing tournament.

In the group stage, Qatar beat Lebanon (3-0), Tajikistan (1-0) and China (1-0) to top Group A with nine points.

The Maroons later defeated Palestine 2-1 in the Round of 16 and later overcame Uzbekistan on penalties in the quarter-finals.

Qatar hold a superior head-to-head record against Jordan in international football, winning 12 of the 23 matches that they have played so far. Jordan have registered six victories while as many as five games have ended in draws.

However, the last time these two sides met, Jordan pipped Qatar 2-1 in an international friendly match at the Thani bin Jassim Stadium in January 2024.
