The AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2023 will be held from Thursday, June 15 to Sunday, July 2 in Thailand.
Organised by the Asian Football Confederation, the AFC U-17 Asian Cup is the biennial international youth football championship held for the men’s under-17 national teams based in Asia.
The upcoming edition will be played as an under-17 tournament for the first time since 2006 after AFC proposed to switch it from under-16 to under-17.
Under the tutelage of head coach Bibiano Fernandes, the Indian U-17 football team will be among the 16 teams to feature in the 19th edition of the AFC U-17 Asian Cup.
The 16 teams have been placed in four groups of four teams each. While Group A features hosts Thailand, Yemen, Malaysia and Laos, Group B includes South Korea, Iran, Afghanistan and Qatar. Tajikistan, Australia, Saudi Arabia and China are placed in Group C.
Bibiano Fernandes’ boys are clubbed in Group D alongside Japan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
The Indian U-17 contingent will start their AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2023 campaign against Vietnam on June 17, before taking on Uzbekistan on June 20. Led by captain Korou Singh Thingujam, the Blue Colts will play their final group match against Japan on June 23.
The top two teams from each group will qualify for the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2023 knockouts.
The two semi-finals are scheduled to be played on June 29. The AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2023 final will be held at Pathum Thani Stadium on July 2.
Ahead of the marquee tournament, the Indian U-17 football team played several high-intensity matches against academy players of some of the top clubs in Spain, and in Germany.
