The United States women’s national soccer team (USWNT) started their FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 campaign against Vietnam at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand on Saturday, July 22 (as per IST).

Under the tutelage of head coach Vlatko Andonovski, the United States women’s football team aimed to claim their third FIFA Women’s World Cup in a row. The United States headed into FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 as two-time defending champions, having bagged the coveted women’s trophy in 2015 and 2019.

Nicknamed the Stars and Stripes, the United States women’s national soccer team is the most decorated side in FIFA Women’s World Cup history with four titles. They won the inaugural edition in 1991, before winning their second FIFA Women’s World Cup in 1999.

Led by captains Lindsey Horan and Alex Morgan, the United States women’s football team were placed in Group E in FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. They were clubbed alongside Vietnam, Netherlands and Portugal.

After facing Vietnam in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 opener, the United States locked horns with the Netherlands in their second Group E fixture at Wellington Regional Stadium on July 27.

Vlatko Andonovski’s women played their final Group E match against Portugal on August 1.

With the likes of Lindsey Horan, Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe and Trinity Rodman in their ranks, the United States started as one of the favourites to clinch the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 but exited the tournament following their Round of 16 clash against Sweden after falling short in a penalty shootout.
