India national football team captain Sunil Chhetri has been one of the most successful sports personalities in the country.

Born in Secunderabad, Telangana, Sunil Chhetri began his professional football career at Mohun Bagan in 2002.

Chhetri later made his India national U-20 football team debut at the 2004 South Asian Games in Pakistan. India registered a 1-0 win against Pakistan U-23 side on March 30, 2004.

Four days later, the talented forward netted a brace in India’s 4-1 victory over Bhutan U-23 team.

Having impressed at the junior level,Chhetri then made his senior India national football team debut against Pakistan in June 2005.

Since then, Chhetri has emerged as a goal-scoring machine for India in international football. 

The Indian star footballer has netted 94 goals in 150 appearances for the India national football team. He is currently India’s all-time top goal-scorer and is in the fourth position for most goals in international football. 

Chhetri is currently the third-highest active goalscorer in international football after Cristiano Ronaldo (128) and Lionel Messi (106).

He is also the most-capped player for India, having made 150 official appearances for the Blue Tigers at international level.

Meanwhile, Chhetri has announced his retirement from international football after the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying match against Kuwait at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on June 6.

Apart from his international exploits, Chhetri has also bagged more than 150 goals at club level.

He has also won several prestigious awards, including the Khel Ratna, India's highest sporting honour, the Arjuna Award - the country's second-highest sporting award, and the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award.

The Indian Super League 2018-19 winner is estimated to earn INR 5 crore every year, including his INR 1.5 crore annual contract with Bengaluru FC in the ISL.

However, the majority of Sunil Chhetri’s income comes from his various endorsement deals. Chhetri has endorsed brands like Pepsi, Puma, Tata Motors, and Iodex.

In 2019, the Indian football team captain signed a three-year deal with Puma. He later became the face of the football fantasy gaming platform Twelfth Man in 2020.
