The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Wednesday, announced that Virat Kohli’s stint as the Indian cricket team’s ODI captain has concluded, appointing Rohit Sharma as the new skipper ahead of the 50-over World Cup in 2023.

While Kohli had made a formal announcement of him stepping down from his T20I captaincy post the T20 World Cup in UAE, the India talisman didn’t relinquish his ODI captaincy.

With the BCCI now confirming Rohit Sharma as the captain of both white-ball formats, Virat Kohli will only lead India in Test cricket.

Let’s take a look at how the outgoing skipper fared in the 50-over format.

Virat Kohli ODI captaincy record

Since making his ODI captaincy debut in 2013, Virat Kohli has led India in 95 ODIs, winning 65 of them while losing 27 matches. Interestingly, Kohli has the best win percentage (70.43) among all Indian ODI captains.

Under Virat Kohli’s captaincy, India have won 15 of the 19 bilateral ODI series and suffered only four defeats. Furthermore, the Men in Blue have clinched eight out of the nine bilateral ODI series on home soil.

During Kohli’s tenure, Team India have won the bilateral ODI series in Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, South Africa, West Indies and Zimbabwe.

In major ICC tournaments, India finished as runners-up in the 2017 Champions Trophy, losing to arch-rivals Pakistan in the final. Team India also reached the semi-final of the 50-over World Cup in 2019 under Kohli’s leadership.

As the ODI captain, Kohli amassed 5449 runs in 91 innings at an impressive average of 72.65. He has smashed 21 tons and 27 fifties. Only former Australia cricket team captain Ricky Ponting (22) has registered more hundreds as captain in ODIs than Kohli.
