South Africa and West Indies have produced several memorable moments over the years in T20 internationals.

They first squared off against each other in the 20-over format during the 2007 T20 World Cup and South Africa won this high-scoring match by eight wickets.

While South Africa is yet to win a T20 World Cup, West Indies have two 20-over World Cup trophies under their belt having won the 2012 and 2016 editions of the tournament.

In the second match of a three-match series in 2015, West Indies scored 236/6 while chasing a target of 232 at Johannesburg. The Windies 236/6 is the highest team total in T20Is between West Indies and South Africa.

Lowest team total

West Indies have also made the lowest total in T20Is in this particular fixture. Chasing a target of 121 during the second game of a two-match series in 2010, the Windies managed to post 119/7 - the lowest team total in this fixture - in the second innings of the game as the Proteas won the match by one run.

Most runs

Chris Gayle has scored the most runs for West Indies in T20Is against South Africa. He made 375 runs in 12 matches at an average of 34.09 and a strike rate of 173.61. Against the Proteas, Gayle struck two fifties and one century, including his best of 117 against South Africa in the first-ever T20I meeting between the teams at the 2007 T20 World Cup.

Dwayne Bravo has taken more wickets in T20Is than any other player in South Africa versus West Indies games. He took 15 wickets at an average of 25.53 and an economy of 7.71 versus the Windies besides also registering the best bowling figures of 4/19 against them.

Highest individual score

South Africa’s Faf du Plessis’ 56-ball 119 is the highest individual score by a player in this T20I fixture. He produced this inning in the second match of a three-match series in 2015 and helped South Africa post 231/7 on the scoreboard. Unfortunately for the Proteas, they lost the game by four wickets as the Windies completed a spirited chase. 

For West Indies, Chris Gayle’s 117 in the first-ever T20 meeting between these sides at the 2007 T20 World Cup is the highest individual score in this fixture by any Windies batter. 

Best bowling figures

South African all-rounder Ryan McLaren’s 5/19 against West Indies in the first T20I of a two-match series in 2010 is the best bowling figures in an inning in 20-over matches between these sides. McLaren’s spell helped South Africa win the match by 13 runs. 

For West Indies, Bravo’s 4/19 in the fourth T20I of a five-match series against South Africa in 2021 is the best bowling figures by any Caribbean bowler in this fixture. His spell helped the Windies win the match by 13 runs.

Highest partnership

Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels hold the record for the highest partnership in T20Is in West Indies vs South Africa clashes. The Windies duo stitched a 152-run stand together as the Caribbean side chased down a 232-run target with four wickets to spare in the second match of a three-game series in 2015.
