Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan finds himself embroiled in a controversy yet again after a video surfaced of him getting angry in a Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match. The country’s premier all-rounder has a history of run-ins with the board and facing suspensions and bans.
The latest incident happened on Friday when he showed dissent at an umpire’s decision in a DPL match between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Abahani Limited. Representing Mohammedan, he scored a 27-ball 37 with one four and two sixes before being dismissed by Mohammad Saifuddin.
However, things escalated when Shakib was asked to bowl in the fifth over of the run chase and appealed for an LBW against fellow countryman Mushfiqur Rahim. The on-field umpire remained unmoved by the appeal, leading to Shakib venting his frustration at the decision by kicking the stumps in anger and gesticulating at the umpire. Mushfiqur had hit him for a four and a six before the appeal took place and the clip of Shakib’s over-the-top reaction has since been making rounds on social media.

On another occasion shortly after the first unruly incident, Shakib was seen extremely animated once again as he uprooted the stumps and threw them to the ground in a fit of rage. What remains to be seen is if the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) gives him a slap on the wrist in the form of a fine or suspension for his on-field behaviour.

Soon after the videos took social media by storm, the Bangladesh all-rounder issued an apology.
Dear fans and followers, I am extremely sorry for losing my temper and ruining the match for everyone and especially those who are watching from home. An experienced player like me should not have reacted that way but sometimes against all odds it happens unfortunately. I apologise to the teams, management, tournament officials and organizing committee for this human error. Hopefully, I won't be repeating this again in the future. Thanks and love you all.
No stranger to controversy, the talented all-rounder has been in the limelight for plenty of wrong reasons in the past. He was banned for six months in 2014 due to severe attitude problems.
In October 2019, the southpaw was suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching the ICC Anti Corruption Code and failing to report bookie approaches that were made to him during the 2018 India T20 League.
Shakib hasn’t been in the best of form in the ongoing DPL. He has scored only 73 runs in six matches at an average of 12.16. The all-rounder has also been dismissed for a couple of ducks and didn’t seem to be at his best in the recently-concluded three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka either.
Shakib is set to miss the second leg of the 2021 Indian T20 League. He represents Team Kolkata but is unlikely to obtain an NOC from the BCB.
