Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma, who has missed the team's last two matches, will miss the remainder of the 2020 Indian T20 League due to what is suspected to be a hamstring injury.

Sharma batted in the first Super Over against Punjab on Sunday but seemingly sustained an injury during the over as he did not come out to field during the second. Kieron Pollard, who has been captain since that second Powerplay, will officially lead Mumbai for the rest of the campaign.

The opener's absence will be a huge blow for the defending champions who were looking in prime position to capture their fifth title and second on the trot. Sharma had scored 260 runs in nine matches and led Mumbai to six victories in eight matches before his injury.

The 33-year-old was also named as an injury reserve for the T20, Test as well as the ODI squad for India's Tour to Australia. In Sharma's absence, Ishan Kishan is expected to continue as the opener for Mumbai and KL Rahul, who is leading this season's Orange Cap race, will partner Shikhar Dhawan at the top of the order for India Down Under.
