The Ranji Trophy 2022-23 started on December 13, 2022 and will run till 20 February 2023, with 38 teams from different groups taking the field in their quest to clinch the 88th edition of India’s premier First-Class tournament.

Defending champions Madhya Pradesh, who are slotted in Elite group D, picked up from where they left off last season with a convincing win over Jammu and Kashmir.

A fantastic all-round performance, led by pacer Avesh Khan’s eight-wicket haul in the match and three half-centuries from Yash Dubey, Shubham Sharma and Rajat Patidar respectively helped Madhya Pradesh register a huge victory by an innings and 17 runs.

Meanwhile, Mumbai, who finished as runners-up last season and lead the list for Ranji Trophy winners with a staggering 41 titles, also won their first fixture of the ongoing campaign.

Riding on Armaan Jaffer’s century and a disciplined bowling performance, the Ajinkya Rahane-led side got the better of Andhra Pradesh by nine wickets.

While there have been some high-scoring draws, a handful of teams were bowled out for low scores on a few occasions, with Nagaland becoming a side to record one of the lowest totals in Ranji Trophy history.

In an Elite group A match against Uttarakhand, the side from the north east was bundled out for 25 runs while chasing a target of 200 runs, suffering a 174-run defeat as a result.

Ranji Trophy 2022-23 points table format

Since Ranji Trophy matches are a four-day affair, the probability of a match concluding in a draw is quite high.

Hence, the competition follows a systematic points table format where a team gains six points for a win.

In case of a drawn match, three points are awarded to the team who has a greater first-innings lead whereas one point will be awarded to the side losing out on the first-innings lead.

In a scenario where there’s a tie, the teams involved are rewarded three points each.

Furthermore, the team which registers a win either by 10 wickets or by a margin of an innings are given one bonus point.

No points are awarded to the team that suffers a defeat.
