Former India wicket-keeper Kiran More believes that the Indian cricket team will have two different captains for Tests and the limited over formats very soon.

“I think the vision of the board drives these things. I believe Rohit Sharma will get a chance soon. Virat Kohli is a shrewd captain who played under MS Dhoni. How long he wants to captain the ODIs and T20s, he will also think. You will learn a lot more about these decisions after the England tour,” More told India TV.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is already experimenting with dual teams at the international level. As the Test specialists will be taking on New Zealand and England in the United Kingdom (UK) from June-September, the limited overs team will also be seen touring Sri Lanka in July.

While we know Kohli will be entrusted with captaincy duties in England for the Tests, it remains to be seen who gets the nod to lead India in Sri Lanka. International teams are already getting comfortable with specialist captains for Tests and limited overs cricket. And More feels that India will implement a similar tactic going ahead.

“It should work in India. What the senior players think about the Indian team’s future is very important. With Virat Kohli, captaining three teams isn’t that easy plus he has to perform as well. And I give him the credit for it because (he’s) performing in every format while captaining and winning… but, I think there will be a time when Virat Kohli will say ‘now it’s enough, let Rohit lead the side’,” the former chief selector added.

Kohli started captaining India in Tests in 2014, but only began leading in white-ball cricket from 2017. Although the 32-year-old has been successful, Ajinkya Rahane too has filled in well at the Test level in Kohli’s absence. Similarly, Rohit Sharma has an impressive record in limited overs cricket, whenever the Mumbai lad has got the opportunity to lead.

As far as Indian T20 league goes, Rohit has inarguably been the best captain on show with five titles - most of them as skipper - to his credit. Many experts have long voiced their opinions on why the Mumbai captain should be taking full-time responsibility of the national side in white ball cricket.
