The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is a little over a month away and the squads for all teams will be announced by the end of this month.
With the Indian T20 League 2024 in full swing, the performance of Indian players are under the scanner as the selectors look to pick a strong side that is in form.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah had earlier said that Rohit Sharma will be the captain of India’s T20 team for the 2024 World Cup, making him a certainty to make the squad.
Rohit along with a few other senior players like Virat Kohli and their pace bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah also look like a couple more nailed-on certainties to make the team.
However, a few of the spots in India’s 15-member squad are still up for grabs and will be determined by how the players fare in the 2024 Indian T20 League.
With that in mind, we take a look at the probable T20 World Cup 2024 India squad for the showpiece event which will be held in the West Indies and United States from June 2.
T20 World Cup 2024 India squad probables
Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma will captain India and look to add to his more than 11,000 T20 runs, which include eight centuries and 74 fifties to his name. He’s scored 297 runs in the ongoing Indian T20 League season at a strike rate of 164.09 and has also made a century.
Yashasvi Jaiswal
Even though Yashasvi Jaiswal hasn’t been in the best of form of late he’s likely to sneak into the squad based on his overall form for India across formats. He boasts a strike rate of 161.93 for India in T20s and has also made four fifties and a century for the Men in Blue in 20-over cricket.
Shubman Gill
While Shubman Gill hasn’t enjoyed much success for India in T20Is despite making a ton, his form in Indian T20 League 2024 cannot be ignored. He’s made 298 runs in eight matches in the ongoing season at an average of 42.57 and a strike rate of 146.80, making him a worthy candidate for his spot in the team.
Virat Kohli
The current Orange Cap leader in Indian T20 League 2024, Virat Kohli is in fine knick having amassed 379 runs in eight games at a strike rate of 150 and an average of 63. He’s also made 4,037 runs for India in T20Is with an average of 51.75 and has 37 fifties and one ton in the format.
Suryakumar Yadav
The world’s top-ranked T20I batter, Suryakumar Yadav’s inclusion in India’s World Cup squad is a no-brainer. Despite missing a few matches for Team Mumbai in the ongoing Indian T20 League season, he’s still struck two fifties and boasts 2,141 runs at an average of 45.55 and a strike rate of 171.55 in international cricket. He also has four tons and 17 fifties in T20Is.
Rinku Singh
Most likely to don the role of finisher for India at the World Cup, Rinku Singh looks to be bound for the Windies and United States in June. A powerful hitter who doesn’t take time to settle at the crease, Rinku has looked good in his limited opportunities in Indian T20 League 2024 and has scored 356 runs in 15 T20Is at an average of 89 and a stunning strike rate of 176.23.
Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya hasn’t been in the best of form, but his all-round abilities give him the edge over his competitors. He brings plenty of balance to the team having made 1,348 runs and taken 73 wickets in T20Is.
Rishabh Pant
After more than a year away from the game, Rishabh Pant has made a strong comeback in Indian T20 League 2024. Pant, who has scored almost 1,000 T20I runs for India, has made 254 runs at an average of 36.29 and a strike rate of 150.30 in Indian T20 League 2024.
Sanju Samson
Based on his current Indian T20 League form, Sanju Samson will most likely be India’s second-choice wicketkeeper at the 2024 T20 World Cup. The right-handed batter has scored 276 runs in seven matches, including three fifties at an average of 55.20 and a strike rate of 155.06 in Indian T20 League 2024.
Ravindra Jadeja
Another talent with loads of T20I experience, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja adds balance to the team and makes for an electric presence on the field. He’s played 66 T20Is and has scored his fair share of runs besides also taking 53 wickets in the format.
Kuldeep Yadav
An in-form player across formats for India, Kuldeep Yadav has taken 10 wickets in five Indian T20 League 2024 matches. He’s also bagged 59 scalps in T20Is for India and boasts a stunning average of 14.10 and an impressive economy of 6.4.
Yuzvendra Chahal
The most in-form spinner in Indian T20 League 2024, Yuzvendra Chahal is the third-highest wicket-taker in the ongoing season with 12 scalps. He’s taken 96 wickets in T20Is and brings a lot of bowling variations and experience to India’s bowling unit.
Jasprit Bumrah
The leading wicket-taker in Indian T20 League 2024 with 13 scalps, Jasprit Bumrah’s inclusion in India T20 World Cup 2024 squad is a given. A high-quality bowler who is comfortable bowling at any time in a match, Bumrah has taken 74 wickets at an impressive average of 19.66 and an economy of 6.55.
Mohammed Siraj
Mohammed Siraj’s place in the squad for the T20 World Cup comes with plenty of question marks. However, he has the experience of representing India in international tournaments, meaning he might just sneak into the squad even though he doesn’t have a good T20I record and isn’t in the best of form at present.
Arshdeep Singh
Arshdeep Singh will most likely be a part of the Indian T20 World Cup team owing to his ability to execute yorkers and bowl in pressure situations. Arshdeep, who has taken 10 wickets in eight Indian T20 League 2024, boasts 62 wickets in 44 T20Is at an average of 20.87.
