After an only Test and the ODI series, Afghanistan’s tour of Sri Lanka 2024 will feature three T20Is beginning from February 17. All three matches will be played at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla, Sri Lanka.

The second T20I will be played on February 19 while the third match will take place on February 21.

The hosts, Sri Lanka, are placed eighth compared to Afghanistan’s 10th position on the ICC T20I Rankings.

The two teams last competed in a T20 match during the Asian Games Men's Cricket Competition 2023

In the third Quarter-Final of the Asian Games, Afghanistan managed 116 in their 18.3 overs. Their bowlers then took charge as they bundled out Sri Lanka for 108 to win the low-scoring thriller.

Sri Lanka won their last T20I series vs Zimbabwe 2-1 in a home series played earlier this year. On the other hand, Afghanistan’s last T20I encounter was a dramatic loss to India which featured a double super over. The Afghans lost the three-match series 0-3 against India.

The home team will be confident going into the T20I series as they showcased complete domination over the visitors by clinching the only Test and the ODI clashes by a 3-0 margin.

All-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga will lead the Lankan team along with his deputy, Charith Asalanka. The squad will also include players like Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dasun Shanaka and Kamindu Mendis. Binura Fernando will replace Dushmantha Chameera, who is nursing a quad injury which he picked in the first ODI.

Their Asian counterparts, Afghanistan, will be led by Ibrahim Zadran instead of their regular skipper, Rashid Khan who is also recovering from a back injury.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mohammad Saleem Safi will also miss the T20I series due to injury woes. The latter has been replaced by Wafadar Momand.

The head-to-head record between these sides in T20Is favours Sri Lanka, who have won three and lost one of the four encounters between the teams.
