Jasprit Bumrah on Monday became the fastest Indian fast bowler to reach 100 Test wickets during the fifth and final day of the fourth Test against England at The Oval.

The 27-year-old etched his name into the history books after he clean bowled England middle-order batsman Ollie Pope in the second session of Day 5.

With Pope’s wicket, Bumrah surpassed former Indian captain Kapil Dev’s long-standing record to become the quickest Indian pacer to achieve the incredible feat. While the Gujarat-born Bumrah reached 100 wickets in 24 matches, 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev took 25 matches.

Former left-arm pacer Irfan Pathan is third on the list, having picked 100 Test wickets in 28 matches while Mohammed Shami (29) and Javagal Srinath (30) complete the top-five list.

Taking to Twitter, BCCI wrote, “What a way to reach the milestone!@Jaspritbumrah93  bowls a beauty as Pope is bowled. Among Indian pacers, he is the quickest to reach the mark of 100 Test wickets.”

Interestingly, Indian cricket team off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is the fastest Indian bowler to reach 100 Test wickets having achieved the milestone in just 18 Tests.

The veteran spinner is followed by some legendary names comprising Erapalli Prasanna (20), Anil Kumble (21), Subhash Gupte (22), B. S. Chandrasekhar (22), Pragyan Ojha (22), and Vinoo Mankad (23).

Since making his Test debut against South Africa in 2018, Bumrah has claimed 101 wickets in 24 matches at an average of 22.76, which is the best among Indian bowlers to reach 100 Test wickets.
