
The Ranji Trophy 2024 began on January 5 and will run till March 14 in India.
Organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the country’s premier first-class cricket tournament will see as many as 38 teams play a total of 137 matches.
The participating teams have been divided into two categories - elite and plate. The elite category has 32 teams split into four groups of eight teams each. On the other hand, there are six teams in the plate category.
Each team in the elite category will play the other seven teams in their group once. The top two teams from each elite group will advance to the quarter-finals.
The plate division will also see each team play the other five sides once. The top four teams out of six will advance to the plate group knockouts.
According to the Ranji Trophy format, the two finalists from the plate group will be promoted to the elite group for the next season. The two bottom-placed teams from the elite groups - factoring in both points and the quotient will be relegated to the plate group.
The Ranji Trophy 2024 has already witnessed few established as well as some rising batting stars produce scintillating knocks for their respective teams.
Agni Chopra, Tanmay Agarwal, Narayan Jagadeesan, Kishan Lyngdoh and Gahlaut Rahul Singh have been some of the leading run-scorers in the ongoing edition of the Ranji Trophy.
Interestingly, VVS Laxman holds the record for the most runs in a single edition of the Ranji Trophy. Representing Hyderabad, Laxman amassed 1,415 runs in nine matches in the 1999-2000 season.
Meanwhile, Wasim Jaffer has the most runs in Ranji Trophy history. Between 1996 and 2020, Jaffer accumulated 12,038 runs in 238 innings.
