Women’s cricket in the 2022 Commonwealth Games will start on Friday, July, 29 with Australia Women opening proceedings against India Women at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
It is going to be cricket’s first inclusion in the Commonwealth Games in 24 years after men’s List A cricket was played in the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
This edition of the Commonwealth Games, however, will see matches being played in the T20 format among eight teams, divided into two groups of four sides each. The teams participating in the event are Australia, Barbados, India, Pakistan, England, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka.
Group A: Australia, Barbados, India, Pakistan
Group B: England, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka
The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals. The teams losing the semi-final rounds will square off in a third-place playoff for the bronze medal.
How did the teams qualify for the 2022 Commonwealth Games?
England, being the host nation, qualified directly for the Commonwealth Games while the next five best teams - Australia, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Pakistan - made the cut based on the ICC Women’s T20I rankings which gave them automatic qualification.
One spot was determined through the qualifiers as Sri Lanka earned their qualification and Barbados were selected after winning the Twenty20 Blaze in 2019.
