Three times Indian T20 League winners Mumbai have been dealt with a massive blow as their captain, Rohit Sharma has hurt his right hamstring ahead of their home fixture against Punjab.

According to Hindustan Times, the incident happened on Tuesday when Sharma, during a practice session, went down in pain before team physiotherapist Nitin Patel rushed for an assessment. Although the batsman got on to his feet, he was seen limping off the field for further assessment and was rushed into the dressing room. He didn’t complete the rest of the session.

The Mumbai management, on their part, are yet to comment over the vigour of their captain’s injury but concerns regarding the problem has grown given that the World Cup is not too far. The intensity of the injury is yet to be confirmed, but it is assumed that hamstring issues usually take two to six weeks to recover.

The timing for the injury couldn’t have been worse given that India are set to announce their World Cup squad on April 15. The World Cup kicks off on May 30, while India’s campaign will begin on June 5 against South Africa.

Ironically, Sharma had suffered hamstring problems ahead of the 2015 World Cup as well. Although he recovered well in time, he missed three games in the build-up to the tournament.

Meanwhile, as far as IPL is concerned, Sharma has been a part of every game for Mumbai this season, scoring 118 runs at an average of 23.60. His side sit fifth on the Indian T20 League log and will face Ravichandran Ashwin’s Punjab at Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday.
