Legendary India cricketer Sachin Tendulkar owns the record for the most hundreds in a calendar year

In the year 1998, Sachin Tendulkar smashed 12 hundreds in 39 matches - the most by any cricketer in a calendar year. The right-handed batter amassed 2,541 runs in 42 innings at an impressive average of 68.67 and a strike rate of 93.69. Tendulkar also registered eight half-centuries in the year 1998.

The Mumbai-born cricketer surpassed the previous record held by former Sri Lanka cricketer Aravinda de Silva, who had recorded 10 hundreds in 39 matches in 1997.

Aravinda de Silva scored 2,432 runs in 46 innings at an average of 62.35 and a strike rate of 69.92. He also slammed 10 fifties in the calendar year of 1997.

Virat Kohli features second on the list for most hundreds in a calendar year. The former India cricket team captain smashed 11 centuries in 37 matches in 2018. Kohli accumulated 2,735 runs in 47 innings at an average of 68.37 and a strike rate of 72.39. The swashbuckling batter also recorded nine half-centuries to his name during that time period.

Interestingly, Kohli also recorded 11 hundreds in 46 matches in the calendar year of 2017. The Indian cricketer was at the peak of his batting career, amassing a staggering 2,818 in 52 innings at an average of 68.73 and a strike rate of 92.15. He also hit 10 fifties in 2017.

Apart from Virat Kohli, Australia cricket legend Ricky Ponting also slammed 10 hundreds in a calendar year. The former Australia captain smashed 10 centuries in 45 matches in 2003, accumulating 2,657 runs in 49 innings at an average of 66.42. 

Under his leadership, Australia clinched the 2003 Cricket World Cup, defeating India by 125 runs in Johannesburg, South Africa. Ponting also played a pivotal role with the bat as he finished as the third-highest run-getter in the tournament. Batting at number three, Ponting scored 415 runs in 11 matches at an average of 51.87 including two hundreds and one fifty to his name.

South Africa’s Hashim Amla completes the top five list. Amla recorded 10 hundreds in just 26 matches in 2010. The former Proteas cricketer scored 2,307 runs in 34 innings at an average of 76.90. He also slammed eight fifties in that year.

Indian duo of Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid along with Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan have also smashed 10 hundreds in a calendar year.
