The Indian cricket team and Australian cricket team, two One Day International (ODI) cricket giants, have produced some jaw-dropping matches over the years. These matches have oozed class, with many talented players creating memorable moments for the cricketing fraternity.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) hosted the first India vs Australia ODI, which was a part of the 1980 Benson & Hedges World Series Cup. The Sunil Gavaskar-led side won the encounter by 66 runs after Sandeep Patil’s flamboyant 70-ball 64.

In the latest ODI between the two teams, India beat Australia by six wickets in match 5 of World Cup 2023.

However, Australia have been the more dominant team in this format, winning 83 of the 150 matches. India, meanwhile, have 57 victories in this head-to-head.

Highest team total

Australia hold the record for the highest team total in ODIs in this fixture. Aaron Finch and Co. scored 389/4 in Sydney in November 2020, courtesy 64-ball 104 by Steven Smith. Glenn Maxwell’s unbeaten 63, notched at a rampant 217.24 strike-rate, enabled the Aussies to set a match-winning total.

Meanwhile, India previously held this record having amassed 383/6 in Bengaluru in November 2013. Rohit Sharma’s maiden ODI double-century helped the Indian cricket team win by 57 runs.

Lowest team total

Team India were bundled out for 63 at Sydney against Australia in January 1981. It remains the lowest team total in India-Australia ODIs till date. The score is also the only two-figure total in this fixture.

Greg Chappell led from the front for the Aussies, registering five wickets and 33 runs in the match. His team won this 1981 Benson & Hedges World Series Cup encounter by nine wickets.

Most runs

Sachin Tendulkar amassed 3,077 runs in 71 India vs Australia ODIs, the most runs by any player in this fixture. The Master Blaster boasted an average of 44.59 and a top score of 175 against the Aussies. Tendulkar’s this feat includes 15 fifties and nine centuries against Australia, the third-most tons by a cricketer against any team in this format.

India’s Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, along with Australia’s Ricky Ponting, are the only other players with 2000-plus runs in India-Australia 50-over matches. 

Most wickets

Former Australian speedster Brett Lee, known during his playing days as one of the world’s fastest bowlers, scalped 55 Indian wickets, while conceding just 4.49 runs per over, in One Day Internationals. He is the only player with 50-plus wickets in this head-to-head between these teams.

Meanwhile, India’s Kapil Dev is second on the list with 45 wickets in 41 matches. He picked up one four-for and one five-for against the Aussies in ODIs. 

Highest individual score

Indian captain Rohit Sharma is the only double-centurion in India vs Australia ODIs. The Mumbai-based batter slammed 209 runs off 158 balls at Bengaluru in November 2013, including 12 fours and 16 sixes, the joint second-most maximums in an innings. It formed the foundation for India’s win in a series-decider.

Rohit Sharma, who again ranks third for highest individual score in this fixture with 171 runs against Australia, is joined in the top three by second-placed Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 175 at Hyderabad in a losing cause in November 2009.

Best bowling figures

Five bowlers have picked up six-wicket hauls in this fixture in the 50-over format. However, former Indian spinner Murali Kartik, with a spell of 6/27, ranks first for the best bowling figures in this head-to-head. His effort helped the Men in Blue register a two-wicket win against the Aussies in October 2007.

Ken MacLeay, Ajit Agarkar, Yuzvendra Chahal and Mitchell Starc are other bowlers with six-fors. Meanwhile, Tendulkar and Lee headline the five-wicket spells in ODIs between the two teams.  

Highest partnership

David Warner and Aaron Finch feature twice in an all-Australian top five for the highest partnership in India vs Australia ODIs. The duo stitched an unbeaten 258-run partnership at Wankhede in January 2020 and this stand tops the highest partnership charts for this fixture in ODIs.

This partnership of theirs helped Australia win by 10 wickets, while their stand of 231 against India at Bengaluru in September 2017 which ranks fourth saw them clinch a 21-run win.

VVS Laxman and Yuvraj Singh built a partnership of 213 runs at Sydney in January 2004, which is the highest by an Indian pair in this fixture. Despite their valiant efforts, the Aussies won the match by two wickets by the Duckworth-Lewis Method.
