Team Chennai have signed Australian fast bowler Jason Behrendorff as a replacement for Josh Hazlewood for the 14th edition of the Indian T20 League.

The 30-year-old fast bowler, who last featured in the T20 extravaganza for Mumbai in 2019, is a like-for-like replacement for his compatriot Hazlewood, who withdrew from the tournament to stay in shape for Australia’s upcoming cricket calendar.

Hazlewood featured in three games for MS Dhoni’s men in the Indian T20 League last season, which was staged in the UAE, and had picked up just one wicket.

Jason Behrendorff has played seven T20Is for Australia so far, and has seven wickets at an economy rate of 7.31. Similarly, his career figures in the Indian T20 League read as five wickets in five games at an economy rate of 8.68.

Hazlewood became the third Australian player, after Bangalore’s Josh Philippe and Hyderabad’s Mitchell Marsh, to withdraw from the cash-rich T20 league.

Chennai begin their 2021 campaign against Delhi at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday, April 10. To get insights and key stats for the fixture, click here.
