Highest team total in List A cricket: Tamil Nadu the only side to breach 500-run mark

Ever since the inception of List A cricket, the 50-over format in particular, various teams have gone on to put on some humongous totals on the board.

However, on November 21, 2022, Tamil Nadu scored 506/2 against Arunachal Pradesh in the  Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022 to become the first side to get past the 500-run mark in the format and record the highest team total in List A cricket history.

In the group phase fixture, Tamil Nadu openers Sai Sudharsan and Narayan Jagadeesan took charge of the proceedings and toyed with the opposition bowlers almost at will.

While Sudharsan scored 102-ball 154, Jagadeesan took his game to another level with a breathtaking 277 off 141 balls to register the highest individual score in List A cricket. The two combined for an opening wicket partnership of 416.

In reply, Arunachal Pradesh were bundled out for 71, facing an embarrassing 435-run defeat in the process.

The record for the highest team total in List A cricket was previously held by the England cricket team, courtesy their 498/7 vs the Netherlands, which still stands as the highest total posted by a team in ODIs.

The first ODI of the England tour of Netherlands 2022 saw the English side post the daunting total, courtesy of a trio of centuries by Phil Salt, Dawid Malan and Jos Buttler.

Thereafter, England bowlers made light work of the hosts and bundled them out for 266.

England’s domestic circuit side Surrey stands third on the list of highest team totals in List A cricket.

In a South Conference fixture of the Friends Provident Trophy 2007, Surrey’s opening pair of James Benning and Alistair Brown scored their respective tons to power their team to a huge total of 496/4 against Gloucestershire.

The second innings saw pacer Mohammad Akram pick up a four-wicket haul to help Surrey to an easy 257-run win.

The England cricket team features again in the fourth spot and Australia were on the receiving end this time out.

Put in to bat first in the third ODI of Australia’s tour of England in 2018, the Eoin Morgan-led English side smashed 481/6, aided by Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales centuries. 

It proved to be a little too much for the Aussies’ batters, who were bowled out for 239 runs.

India A completes the top five.

While touring England in 2018, India A locked horns with Leicestershire. Electing to bat first, Mayank Agarwal and youngster Prithvi Shaw came out all guns blazing and scored centuries to guide their team to 458/4, which was easily defended by the bowlers.
