Born of a dispute between the Cricket Club of India, which own the Brabourne Stadium, and the Bombay Cricket Association (BCA), the 45,000-capacity Wankhede Stadium was built by BCA not more than a kilometre away from the other stadium.

Wankhede held its first Test match in 1974-1975 when the West Indies travelled to India. The hosts were hoping to give a fitting farewell to Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi but Clive Lloyd’s brilliant double century spoiled the occasion.

Since then, from Sunil Gavaskar's memorable 205 against the West Indies in the 1978-79 series to MS Dhoni hitting the winning six in the 2011 ICC World Cup final, the Wankhede Stadium has been home to numerous unforgettable moments.

One of the iconic grounds in the cricket capital of India, Mumbai, the Wankhede Stadium has also seen numerous records being created and broken over the years.

Chosen as one of the six venues to host the Indian T20 League 2021, here we look at the T20I and Indian T20 League records of this venue.

Wankhede Stadium T20I records

Wankhede Stadium Indian T20 League records

Most runs: Being the home ground of five-time Indian T20 League champions Mumbai, it is no surprise to see captain Rohit Sharma being the top scorer at the venue in the tournament with 1,733 runs. Rohit Sharma is currently the third-highest run-scorer in the Indian T20 League, having played over 200 matches.

Most wickets: Without any surprise, Mumbai's Lasith Malinga remains the highest wicket-taker at the Wankhede Stadium with 68 wickets in the league. The Sri Lankan pacer is also the all-time highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 170 scalps to his name in 122 matches.

Highest individual score: The highest individual score at the Wankhede in the Indian T20 League has been made by Virender Sehwag during his Punjab days. Facing Chennai in the second qualifier of the 2014 edition of the tournament, Sehwag scored 122 runs in a match-winning knock that had 12 boundaries and 8 sixes. Punjab reached the final that season.

Best bowling figures: The best bowling figures at the Wankhede has been recorded by Harbhajan Singh against Chennai in 2011. He picked up 5/18. Chennai was chasing a target of 165 runs when Bhajji scalped the wickets of Suresh Raina, Srikkanth Anirudha, Albie Morkel, Ravi Ashwin and Joginder Sharma to end with figures of 5/18 and lead Mumbai to an eight-run win.
