Rahul Dravid tops, Virat Kohli fifth in list for most catches in Test for India

Former Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli completed 100 catches in Tests during India’s third Test of the 2021/22 South Africa, becoming only the sixth player from the country to do so. However, it is Rahul Dravid who tops the list for most catches in Test for India.

Dravid, who holds the record for most catches in Test history, has taken 209 catches in 163 matches for the team, averaging 0.6 catches per innings. 

Second on the list is another reliable slip fielder India had in VVS Laxman. Regarded as one of the most shrewd batters of his generation, the right-hander took 135 catches in 134 matches. The Hyderabad-born batter has taken a maximum of four catches in an innings of a Test match.

Batting great Sachin Tendulkar is in third spot in the list having taken 115 catches in 200 matches (366 innings) at an average of 0.3 catches per innings. The Master Blaster is followed by former captain Sunil Gavaskar who averaged 0.5 catches per innings after finishing his career with 108 catches in 125 matches (216 innings).

Mohammad Azharuddin, who scored a century on his Test debut, completes the top five list for most catches in Test for India. The former skipper took 105 catches in 99 career Tests, taking a maximum of five catches in one innings. He is, in fact, just one of three Indian players who have taken five catches in one Test innings.

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli completed his ton of catches in Test cricket in his 99th Test. He did so by taking a spectacular low catch to dismiss Temba Bavuma in the slip cordon off Mohammed Shami’s delivery. Among active cricketers, he is the only player to complete a century of catches in the longest format and is followed by Ajikya Rahane with 99 catches.
