Kane Williamson stepped down as the captain of New Zealand's Test team on December 15, 2022.

The decision was taken in mutual agreement between the New Zealand Cricket board and Willaimson to manage his workload, while also considering the two upcoming limited-over World Cups in 2023 and 2024.

Kane Williamson's stint as the leader in red-ball cricket for six years was highly successful as he led the Kiwis to unprecedented heights.

Williamson took up New Zealand's Test captaincy in 2016 from Brendon McCullum and went on to lead the side in 40 Tests. Six years down the line, the Kiwi finished with 22 wins, the second highest among his countrymen.

Stephen Fleming, who led the side in 28 wins in 80 Tests, leads the list for most wins as a New Zealand captain. However, Williamson’s incredible win percentage of 55 is the highest for a captain from his country.

It was under Williamson's inspirational leadership where New Zealand picked up their first ICC trophy since winning the Champions Trophy in 2000. The Black Caps won the inaugural Test Championship final held at the Rose Bowl, Southampton, in 2021.

In the final, he scored pivotal runs in both the innings and led by example. After falling one run short of a fifty in the first innings (49 off 177 balls), he steered New Zealand past the 140-run target with a terrific half-century (52 off 89 balls).
